I see your point. That's a lot of truck for $25k.

If you buy anything, it will be a few years before you upgrade the tractor. Are you considering more tractor in the future? Will you likely go bigger? If so, that good opportunity becomes a great deal.

If you buy the half ton now, you'll be borrowing the then 19 year old F350 (assuming the tractor upgrade is five years away) to tow the heavier load. And it wouldn't be long before you trade the half ton on something bigger.

I do plan on going bigger with my next tractor, not just hp but also frame size.

Have a 2008 dodge 2500 with cummins and 373 rears four door 4wd. Around town averages 16 mpg and on road gets 20 to 21 mpg. Pulling a load mileage drops to 10 to 12 depending on load. Very happy with truck now has 120000 miles on it. Truck is comfortable on six hour plus trips and has served me well. Personally don't think you would go wrong with this truck

my 06 model 2500 ccsb 4x4 with the 5.9L I cannot tell you how many times I have put 20K+ on the gn hitch and took off down the highway...

Well if you really hate the dodge you could always turn around and sell it, maybe even for more if your friend is giving you a bit of a deal. However if you plan on getting a bigger tractor... well you know whats going to follow.

If your wife is as sensitive to car sickness and ride quality as you indicate, then it would be a wise move to see if your friend would let you take it on an extended test drive (like 2-4 hours or more). Be nothing worse than buying a truck that makes your wife sick. If wifey not happy then nobody is happy.

FWIW: When I was test driving 3/4 tons a few years back the Dodges rode like a rock wagon compared to all others that I drove (drove both new and used ones). No way would my wife have been happy (she is sensitive too). Anyway the ones that I was test driving were in the 2004 to 2007 range so they were a bit older than the one you are considering so maybe Dodge improved the ride some by 2010. Regardless I would want to be sure.
