Few John Deere's and one Ford 3600 diesel.
After a long time debating on a new truck or not, I stopped by my local Chevy dealer to crunch some numbers on a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500 LT, white, extended cab, Z71 4x4, Duramax. Sticker price on the truck was $50,610.00(should come with a well and a septic tank if you ask me!!!). Anyways, talked the dealer down to $44,123. This includes rebates....which btw were $3,005(what's that extra $5 all about????). Doesn't include taxes, and i'd be swaping my farm tag to the new truck so tags and title won't be an issue as far as final numbers go. How does this price sound to ya'll? Seemed pretty decent to me all in all. Not enough to make me jump on the deal ofcourse....although i've never been much of an impulse buyer anyways. The salesman doesn't seem like he's going to budge anymore on the price and the shocking thing is Chevrolet knocked more off then Ford or Dodge were willing to do! Haven't taken my truck to get any trade-in numbers yet, probablly going to do that tomorrow.

Just wanted to run the deal by ya'll and see what everyone thought. I'd also love any feedback on the 2011 2500HD Duramax if anyone on here has one and would like to share. This would be my first diesel truck so kind of nervous about it after hearing all the horror stories you can hear about these new diesels. I've thought about getting another 1500 Z71 but i just HATE the gearing in them now, I think the sheet metal feels cheap, and I'm not crazy about the 5.3 with active fuel management(call me old fashioned). I also looked at some F-150's at several Ford dealerships but they don't want to deal on those either.

Another thought I had was waiting til 2012 and just order what I want, save up a few more $$$ to put down, but I would hate to let this deal get away if it's a good one. My current 04 Z71 isn't falling apart, but starting to show its age, so I don't NEED a new truck but like i said, my 04 IS starting to show its age a bit.

Any comments/help/advice would be much appreciated!

I am not a GM man so I will not bad mouth them. Now I will bad mouth 3/4 ton trucks. I had a Dodge and a Ford 3/4 ton and both were disappointing. I would look for a 1 ton SRW. You will increase your payload in a Ford by doing this by 1,500#. Not sure what it is in GM now days but back in 05 when I had a Dmax 1 ton SRW it was something like 1,100#. Take a close look at the GVWR of the truck then figure 7,400# with you and fuel. My guess is the payload will be about the same or worse than your 1/2 ton you have now. This is the main issue with 3/4 ton trucks.

Personally I would wait till November. The 2012's will be out and I have found the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas the best time to buy 1 year old models.

i acctually had you in mind today when we searched on the computer for 3500 SRW 4x4 trucks and we could only locate them in 2wd configurations, and the 2 4x4's we found were work trucks. i really would like one of the f-250/350's but none of the Ford dealers will give you the time of day unless youre ready to pay MSRP. the GVWR on the truck i looked at was 10,000 if i remember right(the Chevrolet 2500). i've also thought about waiting til the 2012's come out but i just didnt want to pass up on this truck if it was a really good deal. it's about 85-90% configured the way i'd want it to be, so i doubt i'd hate it after a few months. this would be SO much easier if you didn't have to spend $50,000 to get a decent truck capable of some real work!!!!

One other thing is I would not buy a new diesel truck unless it came with a factory installed pressure driven brake controller. Once you use one compared to aftermarket there is just no comparison. Best $200 you will ever spend. Actually think Ford's is $165, not sure about GM or if Dodge even has one yet.

And no, it cant just be added. I looked at adding it to a friends 2005 F-350. Uses a completely different master cylinder, ect. Would cost $1000 or more after the fact.

Does this truck you are looking at have one?

from what I see here on the build sheet it has an integrated trailer brake control, exhaust brake, trailer sway control. Seems like it's set up to tow. one thing i will say is this, the F-250 with the 6.7 i test drove awhile back seems to have MUCH more power then the Duramax in this truck did. also, i was honestly not impressed with the Allison. it honestly felt like the transmission in my current truck. i guess i was expecting a miracle or something, but like i said i didn't see what the big deal about it was. still was a nice truck though, rode nice. i think the Ford rode slightly better however, ofcourse that could have been because the Ford was a CC and this Chevrolet is an extended cab.

RollingFarms,

What are you going to be using the truck for? Agreed the prices are steep, but my 1/2 ton 6.2 4x4 (poor mans Denali) stickered for 43K. Got it down to $36k rather quick but mine was stuck between the usual Sierrra and close enough to a Denali to not have many takers.

That being said, if you liked your 04 Z71 (that's also what I had last) you'd love the one I have. The 3:42's aren't noticable with the 6 speed and the 6.2. That was one of my biggest fears.

PM me with any detail questions.

I have to agree with Tim. 4 years ago you could not give me a truck with anything less than 3.73 gears but with the new transmissions 3.55 and higher are now very capable due to the deep first two gears in the tranny.

Give one a try, you may be surprised. My dad got a 2011 F-150 4x4 Crew Cab with that new Twin Turbo 3.5L V6. It has 3.73 gears and you would swear it has 4.30's or deeper. That truck just plain amazes me with what it can do being a V6. Hard to describe without one driving it.

A few years ago, 3:73 was pretty much a given on trucks due to all of the hills that we have around here. 3:42's were around, but not that common.

3:42 with a 6 speed appears to be the new 3:73, and it seems to be just fine. The engineers got this right.
