Why?
Have you done the math?

Trans ratio gearing--4 speed----------6 speed
1st gear--------------3.06--------------4.03
2nd gear-------------1.63--------------2.36
3rd gear--------------1.00--------------1.53
4th gear---------------.70---------------1.15
5th gear-----------------------------------.85
6th gear-----------------------------------.67

Overall gear ratio - trans X rear=overall ratio

-------------------- 4 speed w/3.73-----------6 speed w/ 3.08
1st gear-----------------11.4-----------------------12.4
2nd gear-----------------6.1-------------------------7.26
3rd gear------------------3.7-------------------------4.7
4th gear------------------2.6-------------------------3.5
5th gear-----------------------------------------------2.6
6th gear-----------------------------------------------2.0

I guess it depends on what you want to do with the truck but it looks like 6 speed with 3.08 would be better than 4 speed with 3.73.
Hope my math is right and I didn't fat finger it to many times.;)

The 6 speed 3.08 actually looks similer to a 4 speed 4.10 after doing the math.

i'm sure your numbers are right, but i was basing it on real world experience. i have a friend who has a 2010 Z71 CC 4x4 with the 3.08 gears. he let me pull my trailer with it oneday to see how it drove. he doesn't use his truck for pulling like i do. needless to say his truck is a DOG compared to mine. your numbers might be on par but from my experience it just isn't the setup i would want for my uses.

killing time tonight, i found myself browing on Carmax's website. i came accross a 2006 F-250 Lariat CC, 4x4, powerstroke with 25k miles on it:shocked:. looking at the 36 pics they had of the truck the wear seems to fit the claim of 25k miles on it too! could this be a jewel or a lemon? the price on the truck was $31,998. this seems almost too good to be true! you know the old saying, if it sounds too good to be true it usually is. BUT, maybe i could be lucky enough to score a really great truck with such low miles:confused: anyone have any experience with Carmax? i'm REALLY thinking about going to check this truck out as it's only in North Carolina and i would have to pay $49 to have it shipped to SC. they claim i can get my money back after i test drive it and decide not to buy it. what do you guys think? sound too good to be true? i would post a link but don't want to get in trouble with TBN, but if you'd like to check it out go to the Carmax website and click on the vehicle selection for Ford, then type in "diesel" in the search and scroll down to the bottom.

I bought a 4 year old Dodge Ram from them. They had it shipped from another city. They gave it a complete inspection and ended up doing some minor repairs and service and put 4 tires on it for the same price. (They also will tell you if it is from a non-smoker if that matters)
I was under no obligation to buy it after I inspected it, but I think I was obligated to pay the transfer fee. The owners manual was missing and they reimbursed me for the cost of a new one.
I was happy with them and would use them again.

Not only does that truck have the dreaded 6.0l Powerstroke known for head gasket issues but the main cause of head gasket problems is lack of use and a lot of sitting. A 5 year old truck with only 26k miles? I GUARANTEE that truck will need head gaskets before 100k. Get an extended warranty if their is one and make sure that would be covered.

As far as the 3.08 gear in your buddies truck, unless he had much taller tires or a heavier truck, it should actually pull better and faster than a 4 speed with 3.73's. It will shift more but keep the engine in the sweet spot. Comparing it to an older truck is tough because these new trucks are more optimized for fuel mileage. Hook up a SuperChips to it and you'll see the difference. It added 21hp and 33 lb.ft. to my truck and you can feel it.

2 buddies have recently bought new trucks similar to what you want. I don't remember exact details but here's the highlights.

Buddy 1: Ford King ranch, 1ton, 4x4, dually, diesel. Sticker $62K, discount about 10K, 5 months ago. Trade in clouded the deal. Nice truck.

Buddy 2: GMC Denali 1 ton, 4x4, SRW, diesel, loaded. Sticker around $60K, discounted down to $52K, 2 months ago. Trade in clouded the deal. Very nice truck. He went to a dealer that sold all the big 3 on different lots and asked why was ford/dodge giving more discount? Was told, "If you want a discount that big, we'll walk across the street and sell you 1 of those."

Buddy 2 just got a new company truck too. A gas Ford 3/4 ton with the new 6.2 gas engine. He says it runs really good but won't outrun his Duramax empty to empty nor loaded or towing. He said "there's a big difference between 400 + ft/lbs and 800 ft/lbs of torque. He keeps the Duramax parked in the barn clean mostly while he wears out the company truck and burns company gas. I told him it just isn't fair. He gets 2 new trucks in the span of 2 weeks and I have a '99 suburban.
