Not for street driving. But off road, SFA is better.

My previous Ford, tore the IFS out and put a straight axle in. Much better when I went hunting ect.

Interesting, at least with Ford's IFS, it rode better, but the SFA out handled it, and also turned tighter. Felt better with the big cabover camper I used to have too.

My old S10 4x4 IFS/torsion bar ran good, handled good, and was ok for real basic getting off road.

As part of an answer to this, look at all the Toyota guys that yank thier IFS and put a straight axle in for running Rubicon ect(although I do not understand driving a Toyota on a JEEP trail; should just get a Jeep...)

IFS is not inferior in anyway to the SFA. What is the weak link in the SFA ?? Ball joints, and it is only as storng as them.

So yesterday afternoon I called NH's "Troop G" and talked to a CVI. I told him that I was looking to purchase a new '11 F350 and wanted to clarify some drivers license concerns.

I asked if I would need a CDL to drive the truck with no trailer, he asked what the GVWR was and I said 12,500 (ish). He replied no CDL needed since the GVWR is under 26k.

I asked how about when pulling trailers, he asked what size my trailers were and I said 12k and 14k. He replied no CDL for the 12k since GCWR would be 24,500 and that is under 26k. He replied I would need a CDL class A for the 14k since GCWR would be 26,500 and that is over 26k/10k trailer.

He made it very clear that GCWR = GVWR + GVWR.

Sorry for being stubborn/dumb but....
Some part of this equation I still don't get, my phone is ringing right now, I'm calling our states DOT commercial truck division, must be busy cause it's been ringing going on 10 minutes now, OK just left a message for him.

Anyway what does the 10K trailer have to do with anything if it's just GVWR+GVWR? What if it's 20K truck and just 8K trailer, that's over 26K would you not need CDL?

You should of asked that CVI specifically what would CDL requirement be if the truck itself has a GCWR of 26001 Does that change anything?
With just that manufactures GCWR being over 26K is that when +10K trailer issue comes into play?

I left a message for my official, I'll report back if I / when I hear from him.

If the trailer is under 10k it doesn't count into the equation.

20k truck + 8k trailer = No CDL

JB.

I did ask him and the GCWR (the GCWR in the truck specs) means nothing as far as CDL requirements go.

Then why will Officer Bean write you a ticket for 10001 gvw trailer if no USDOT on the door of a F-350 SRW ?

Different definition of CMV.

Different section of the regulations.

What I'm getting from this is that to use an F350 to tow a trailer rated for 14000# I would need a CDL. You can't even come close to the Ford's advertised trailer rating of, was it, 21000# without a CDL.

As a curiosity, my EQ trailer has a pair of 5200# dexter axles but the GVWR is 9900#. Very intentional that the trailer's rating is below 10000#.

I've been researching trailers for a few months now. I like the PJs a lot and there's a dealer in Chico that handles that brand as well as several others.

I notice that PJ has an option to rate a trailer at 9990 lb GVWR even though the axle ratings put the GVWR over 10,001 lb. For example, this one

This is EXACTLY what started this whole conversation that has been dragged out way too much. My initial comment was why would Ford list some ridiculous tow capacity of 21k lbs if you cannot even come close to that without a CDL license. That is why I said:
I don't understand the 21,600lb towing capacity, there is no way the truck weighs 4,400lbs or less so that means the GCWR would have to be over 26,000lbs. Who wants a 1-ton dually truck that they have to have a CDL just to drive, even empty...?
Of course, by empty I meant the trailer empty and not the truck. Apparently I had to clarify that later on.

It's a stupid numbers game that Ford has to play to make their trucks look tougher. You cannot legally tow any more with a Ford then you can with a Dodge or GM without proper licensing. These trucks are so tough now they are limited by CDL requirements instead of the trucks ability.
