From pickuptrucks.com's buyers guide for the 2002 3500, I see this:

--- cut ---
Both the Vortec 8100 and Duramax 6600 Diesel V8 permit towing trailers up to 12,000 pounds; they provide a maximum 22,000-pound gross combined weight rating (GCWR).

With a fifth wheel or gooseneck hitch, trailering capability increases to an astounding 15,800-pound maximum.
--- cut ---

That would seem to indicate that the GCWR would be 25,800 pounds with a GN, just shy of CDL territory.

So my tractor loaded would be about:

8500 tractor
400 wheel weights
200 larger wheels tires
2000 FEL
1000 grapple
12100 total

My Bush Hog 3209 would add another 2600 lbs or so, for a total of 14,700. And the weight of the trailer itself is 4,800, for a grand total of 19,500 plus the truck which is 8,100, making the whole thing come in at 27,600.

Hmm, that takes me over by quite a bit. I was planning on hauling the above combo about 3 miles down the back road about once a month to maintain about 30 acres.

Perhaps I should just drive the tractor there directly? It would be quicker than loading/unloading the tractor, but I'm worried about tire wear being that its all black top.

Loading and unloading (twice, to go and return) is not worth it for a 3 mile trip.
I drive 6 miles each way from house to hunting property rather than trailer it.
Takes about 20 minutes, each way, about the same time as to load.

If I have the tractor at the house (normally at the hunting property) and it's low on fuel, I drive it 3 miles each way to the gas station. Vs driving my truck, filling 6 gallon cans then having to pour the fuel in manually.

Are you driving on a dirt road or black top?

My only concern with just driving it there and back is tire wear on the hard surface. Supposedly the Michelin AgriBib radials I have should wear well (not too bad) on hard surfaces.

All black top.

A three mile trip on blacktop would not be significant for tire wear. I would ride the tractor for such a short distance.

On my 4520 I added some plates to chain the front down, makes hauling the tractor much easier and provides a way to use four chains. May be a way to do this or similar to a 5xxx tractor. The holes are large enough to run a 3/8" grab hook through them.

So far I have about 100km of road travel on my 5093 with no noticible wear. I wouldn't worry unless you have an alignment problem or loose front end.

It will probably be fine. I do it all the time with the 6430 now. It still has the little prints on the tire that say the tire size and Multibib on them. I probably put around 40 miles on it already just on blacktop. And I'm putting it to the floor maxing out the Autoquad trans, putting out 27.5MP/H :D

Don't worry about your tires, You have the Michellin Agribibs correct? If they are, Michellin's are beasts, you dont have to think about wearing them down. Look at the guys in Europe, They drive the snit out of tractors and they still have good rubber.

Cool, that's what I'll do then. Yep, I got the Michelin Agribibs.

It's 3.6 miles each way and I'll be doing it once a month during the growing season.

It was a fun drive yesterday. This thing maxes out at 22.2 mph. :D

These back roads a very hilly and I had to downshift a lot to keep it from lugging. Good break in for the engine. I'm not seeing any black smoke, even when running WOT up a hill and having to down shift. I guess that's a good thing.

The lack of black smoke must be the computer controlled fuel injection, because the E will pump out some black smoke! I'm sure them M is much better on fuel too.

The 6415 only goes about 18mph, seems slow compared to Edward S's. Only mild hills doesn't even slow it down. But then I am already going slow :D

Does it have the whiz bang electronic common rail Tier III or Tier IV emissions diesel? Or the mechanical pump Tier II engine?
