Cummings never had a good reputation for diesels, they were considered at the bottom of the list. CAT, Perkins, Mercedes, Detroit, others were preferred.

I can only speak from my experiences. I own a bulldozer, 1987 Case 850D with 6600 hours, the engine is a naturally aspirated Cummins, never been apart and no failures. The other is a 2001 Dodge 3500 reg cab 4x4, Cummins with a manual. Again, 300k miles and engine still going strong, never been apart. That's all I can speak to. Never owned a Cat, Perkins or Mercedes. I have worked on Detroits, noisy, oily beasts but do tend to have some longevitiy.

The 5.7 never used timing belts.

I wont settle for anything but the 5.7.

Does my vehicle have a timing belt or timing chain?

But I agree with you when doing a timing belt, do the water pump.

Unless you are buying dollar store transmission fluid, 20,000 miles is a waste. I do mine every 2 years, which is 50,000 miles with full synthetic. I think i would pay the extra for Toyota atf.

You are right about the timing belt cuz the 5.7 uses chain. I must have been thinking about my lady's Acura that I just replaced. :)

The reason I do it every 20K is because each time I drain and fill I only replace 1/3 of the total fluid. I use Toyota fluid and it costs around $55 bucks which is cheap for 20K miles.

Can't speak about 2014 model year - but I love my Tundra. It's a 2010 - 5.7 - 4 x 4. Appx. 65,000 miles and I've had it since new. Just went across scales at gravel pit this morning and registered 18,000 total lbs. Breakdown as follows: Dump Trailer -( Belmont 6'8" x 12'- 12,000#GVW) empty wt with wood sides - 4000# appx.---Passenger, tools, etc - 400# appx----Truck, curb wt. - 5600# appx.---4 yds. 1-1/2" crushed stone in trailer - 8000# appx. Pulled it OK - but I definitely knew it was back there. Also - gravel pit is only 5 miles from my house. Scales were busy with trucks coming out so I couldn't get weight before loading. Will try next time to get weighed empty to see weight of gravel or stone I'm hauling.

How do they charge you for the gravel if they didn't get a empty weight?

Yes - they do charge per yard for smaller quantities. They have a small articulated Kubota loader with a 1 yard bucket.

Lot's of places charge by the scoop.

I have bought at 10 or so places and its always by weight except for mulch and such.

Guess its a regional difference.

I have a 2003 Tundra TRD 4x4 w/4.7L. Love it, and only ~53K miles.

Lately I've been looking at the 5.7's....

I have a 2015 double cab with the TRD package, 5.7 engine. I only have about 8500 miles on it. So far, I am very satisfied. It is tremendously more powerful than my 2004 with the 4.7.

When I liven in northern New England, where that post was from, I bought small amounts of gravel by the scoop. Big trucks full were by the yard and never by weight. Probably because small operators, which was everyone, didn't have scales.

When I got to Ohio, everything was by weight and I had no way to compare how much to order. All this probably because most New England gravel is "bank run" and most Midwest is crushed rock.
