Tractor
Mahindra 2015
Hi All, Last spring I bought a barely used 2015HST with 100 hrs on it from a private individual. No problems until recently at 200 hrs. One day, the tractor just wouldn't fire, getting 12 volts to the glow plugs but my multimeter showed that all of the plugs were out of range (read "OL") in ohms.

Figuring that they were just bad, I replaced all 3 plugs. Had 2-3 ohms resistance when new, so I thought I was good to go. Well, started it for the second time since the new plugs this morning and I have the same problem. Still getting 12 volts to them, which goes off with the solenoid and dash light, but the plugs are showing about 25 ohms resistance and no starting. Just a lot of white smoke.

Local dealer has never ran into this, but will be checking with the factory Monday. Could the glow plug controller or something go bad and cause this? The only thing I have left to check is the grounds, which is my project for the day.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

If this is anything like my VW TDI there are three things that could be wrong. Glow plugs (test each resistance), Glow plug "relay", and the Glow plug harness.

Help me diagnose a little here. When you turn the key on, how long does the glow plug light stay on, and when you replaced the glow plugs what is the part number of the plugs you installed. I am wondering if you could have installed the wrong glow plugs as they had an update but the timer has to be matched to the correct glow plugs. Let me know.

The timer stays on for about 10 seconds initially, they maybe 7 sec or so if i cycle it a few times. The plugs that were originally in it were Champion CH 1444 10.5V, both sets of replacement plugs were NGK 0841 Y724u 8V. I was concerned that they had a different voltage rating, but the dealer told me they were correct. Even if the replacements ARE the wrong plug, shouldn't the original plugs last longer than 200 hrs? Seems so, because everyone I talk to says they've never had a problem with glow plugs on any tractor.

By the way, the tractor is a 2007 I think (not positive though).

Thanks for any help.

There are two different part numbers for the controller and two different numbers for the plugs. They supposedly are supposed to be matched. I went through this last Summer and I really expect it to be a recurring problem. Actually I have had much better life from the GP's since I unplugged the the wire from the controller sensor on the thermostat housing. You probably need to get the number off of your controller and see if it is correct for the number on your plugs. Once you get those sorted out you should be OK for a while. That said, don't be surprised when the plugs fail again. Those NGK quick glow plugs are problematic IMHO.

It's under the panel below the steering wheel. It's plastic so be careful in the cold. Maybe 2 bolts on each side? Don't over tighten or you will crack it. Check the Cub Cadet forum......there was a pic on there a while back that will show you exactly where it is. Search 7205 glow plug controller or something to that effect.........

well, I read found the discussion on the cub forum about the old versus new system for the glow plugs.(http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/cub-cadet/137230-cub-cadet-7205-question-2.html). Seems like I may have been given "new" 8v plugs when the old ones were 10.5. The dealer that I bought them from never asked what voltage plugs were in it or for a serial number, dumb me for not knowing I guess.

Still doesn't explain why they burnt out in the first place....

Things wear out. Glow plugs are cheap. I wonder if they are ceramic or steel? The GP in my Kioti 3054 went bad after I sold it and it only had a couple hundred hours on it.

If your glow plugs stay on 10 seconds, then you have the updated system which is good and the Mahindra plug part number you are using with it shoud be 32A6603100 and just what the NGK number it is I don't know.

My glow plugs (2 of 3) went bad on my 2615 with less than 200 hours on the tractor. I replaced them (only available at a dealer) for almost $100 incl. tax. I thought price was high but could not get them anywhere else. As to why they failed I don't know. But I have been told that connecting a high boost battery charger (the kind with boost start mode) can apply a voltage / amperage too high for plugs to survive very long. I did have to jump start mine a few times prior to this knowledge. Now I keep the tractor in the garage with a trickle charger to keep the battery topped off and use an in line lower hose heater to pre heat the coolant before starting. I haven't had any starting problems since.

I understand that glow plugs go bad, but not 3 sets within 10 engine hours. I will check tomorrow with the dealer and see what plugs they sold me. Regardless, could there be something wrong with the controller which is frying the plugs? I'm not real excited to spend another $100 on a set of plugs again without figuring out what's causing it.

Thanks for all of the ideas and responses.

I'm not sure if this will help, but in removal of the plugs on the 2815/3215 they have you disconnect the negative battery cable. If this wasn't done possibly it caused damage to them when installing. Just a thought.

I had hard starting. I measured resistance of glow plugs one was failed open. Trying to find replacement was a chore. Local dealer supplied the NGK 0841 Y724u 8V. I had the updated controller and this made starting more difficult. The updated controller uses 10.5v glow plugs and they are not compatible with thte NGK 8V plug. The 10.5 v glow plugs are actually Champion CH 144 10.5V they came in a Mahindra bag with Part number 32A66-03100. I would like to thank Lawalls Tractor for having theses in stock and shipping them to me real fast. Called them on Monday had them Thursday. I replaced the one dead plug started right up no white smoke. The easy way to tell what plug you have is The Champion 10.5V plug has a gold or bronze zinc or cadmiuim plating and red insulator right below electrical connection. The NGK 8V plug was silver in color it appeared to be made of stainless steel. I tried to find Champion plug locally but they are an OEM only plug. Again thanks to Lawall's for your support. I will be ready for our weekend long storm just in time.

Hockeymaine, what tractor do you have that uses the 32A66-03100? My glow plugs (2 of 3) just went bad again. I replaced the first set at about 150 hours. My book called for a 31A66-13201 and dealer said that number was changed to 31A66-13200 which I bought and installed. Now with 322 hours I have replaced them again. My plugs say NGK 0582 Y724U 8V. I am guessing they are 8 volt plugs and my controller gives them 12 volts for 5 seconds. I suspect this is why I've gone through another set, too much voltage.
I've sent Galen a PM so perhaps he can look into this and find out if Mahindra made a mistake on glow plug numbers for a 2615.

I have a 2015 HST with updated glow plugs and controller.

The fact glow plugs only stay on 5 seconds seems to imply wrong plugs. When I had the one 8V plug installed the glow plug controller only had plugs on for about 5 seconds. With all the good 10.5V plugs relay stays on 15 seconds when engine is cold.

I just replaced my glow plugs in my 2615. The old plugs were Champion ch144's. The dealer gave me three new plugs and they are the NGK's. I installed them and they work fine. I believe they are 8volt though, thus 8v that is marked on them. So far so good....
Needless to say if they do go bad, Mahindra will be sending three new plugs for it...they were $35.00 each!!! The dealer said that they changed the part number and they call for the NGK's. From what I have been reading, they may not last all that long....

Original problem has been solved. With information in hand provided by Galen Lawall on this board, I gave the dealer the proper part number for the glow plug. Apparently this didn't match what the dealer's book said it should be. After a bunch of going back and forth with serial numbers and such, seems that she had sold me 2 sets of the old style (8V) glow plugs when my tractor had the updated timer and should have had the 10.5V style (like was originally in it). In the end, they sent me the updated "kit" with the new controller and 3 new (10.5V) plugs. All works now.

The timer stays on for about 10 seconds initially, they maybe 7 sec or so if i cycle it a few times.

Doing this can burn out glow plugs , turning the key off and straight back on resets the timer but the glow plugs are still hot from the previous attempt . You are then heating an already hot plug which can burn it out . Let them cool for a few seconds before trying to start the engine again .
