2015 Hay Season

I think you did the right thing. A neighbor that is up front and honest is a good neighbor. Sometimes making a few bucks isn't the main goal. Good for you.

I told him I will do it(I knew nobody else will come do it and 12acres isn't much for me to do) that's not a problem I'm not busy but I would have to charge $24 with a 24 bale minimum but the problem I have is it isn't what I think is the best route to go, so I would like to give you another option. That's when I went into the other but when I was leaving I thought why don't you just do what is asked, instead of having to give your opinion. I was just wondering if I done the right thing,I thought I was but someone else's opinion may be different.

Kinda half way with you. You were honest it is a huge +++ . On the other hand, he had already cost you time. So I would have cut it and I and told him next year you might want to.....

Once the grass is at baling height my cows stomp it down if turned in it more than eat it anyway.

We have about 10-11 acres of hay at a small farmette ( 18 acres total) and we do 50/50 with local farmer. I think the only reason he really cuts it is because we're like 1 1/2 mile from his house and his sons house and they both have A LOT of cows but not a lot of hay fields nor pasture. First cutting this year which was late by 2 weeks due to rain (maybe 3) was something like 800 bales (we got 400, he said he got 400), second cutting was 190 bales then he started doing rounds for his half. 10 rounds.

Other than 50/50 he charges us nothing, no diesel, no string, nadda.

I always wondered how long his share lasted...

For what it's worth; I think you did the right thing and have a trusting customer for life.

OK, that's it. I'm done for the year.

Finished rolling Friday afternoon. Got only 49 rolls (4x5) from 52 acres. Most of my hay meadows were only cut twice this year. A good cutting in June, and cleaning up the scraps now. We are VERY dry here, and have been for nearly 3 months.

BTW, I thought I'd share my experiences from the last few days for your entertainment.
One roll of hay in the pond. Thought I was kicking it out far enough away, but I was wrong. Then, I got the tractor stuck trying to get it out. (finally did get it out of the water the next day, but that's a long story) :D
Four flat tires on the trailer. (2 blowouts, and two leakers) I had 45 rolls to deliver to a customer that lives about 10 miles away.
One hay spear punched through the deck of my trailer. (don't ask, it's too embarrassing)
Other than that, everything went very smoothly.

Y'all have fun.
Lord willing, we'll do it all over again in 2016.
