2015 Hay Season

I have never raised cattle in Texas but always heard that that straight Angus or Herefords didn't do as well in the heat.

Now for the next question - what's causing the white on this guy?

Angus can have white on their underside but to be eligible for registering not in front of the navel. My bull was AI sired by a bull named S S objective with good EPD's but because of the white hair I purchased him cheaper which is fine because I have commercial cows which color doesn't matter.

1st year getting a full crop of hay. Got rye coming up now and hope to cut in a week or so. Probably will be dodging rain at time. Hope to get it cut before some nice days and bale before it rains again. Otherwise it'll be the middle of June before any really nice days arrive

Here's a photo of my registered Angus bull that will be 3 yrs old in the Fall. My black cattle handle the N Texas heat just fine.

Looks real good.

Hay season was looking great with all the Vetch, Clover, Wild Rye and Bermuda. Stuff is already waist high. Put down 250lbs per acre of Urea with perfect timing. Only issue is the rain. We should have cut weeks ago but so much rain and no end to it.

Warning: Thistle is abundant this year, be careful buying hay. You don't want to bring this stuff into you fields!

Thanks. His calves grow good & sell very well. A while back I wasn't paying enough attention to calf weights and 2 of his son's got too large at a little over 6 months of age. At the auction one weighed 700#s and the other 655#s and both brought over $1500 each. It amazes me a 400+ weight calf off a cow will dollar out nearly as much as 700 weight calf with much less feed involved plus it gives the cow longer period to get FAT before the next calf arrives. Out of 17 calves sired by this bull 14 of them have been males which is unusual. The Charolais bull I had before him sired a larger % of female calves.

I have had mine a few years.

Tx Jim I use to keep my calves once weaned and feed them out a few weeks but now it's just not worth it,just take them to sale. 4to5 weight is typically what taking them at.

Since put out fertilizer Monday have had close to an inch on the only pasture could get in but forecast for rain next 10days,it's going to be awhile not even going to be able fertilize the other pastures, just going to have to bale the others once can get in them. Weed spraying is going to have to be done later also, maybe won't be to many. I have at least 60 rolls left over so one good cutting on all them I will have more than enough hay. Second cutting will just see but more than likely run cows on the 30acres at house and do only my lease pastures.
