Purchased this used from dealer last fall. Haven’t really done much with it until today, planting grass seed.
There is NO steering lock/end side to side. When I turn either direction… it goes and goes. The tires hit their end, but the steering wheel continues to turn. The tires then fade back unless you continue turning. This becomes an issue as the tractor won’t hold side hills without constantly turning the wheel. And I don’t mean just holding pressure against the hillside… I mean spinning the wheel. On a small side hill, I was turning it 1 completely revolution about every 10yds. The tractor continued to drift down the hill, which is normal, but the steering wouldn’t hold it.
It’s the oddest thing and I don’t know if it’s something ‘new’ in this model or what in the heck it could be otherwise. It is difficult to back up as well, because you can’t just crank it to a lock and reverse… you have to continually turn the wheel around and around.
Thoughts? I’ve owned a similar year 5100E which worked normally. I grew up on a 4020 and couple IH. They both locked when turning. This tractor is awful to drive because it’s a constant struggle to maintain a line of any sort.
Another thing I noticed today was the FEL leaks down as well, while driving. Haven’t noticed this before, but I’ve been using it primarily, not leaving it static and farming. With or without the bucket, it drops significantly, ending up at the groundif I don’t adjust. Don’t know if they could have the same underlying issue with hydraulics.
