Diesels also have a longer life expectancy than big gas engines. You should expect 250k out of a big V8, but double that for an medium duty I6 diesel (ie Cummins). Lots of Cummins powered Dodges have gone over a million miles without opening the engine up.

I thought I read once that a gallon of diesel fuel holds more energy than a gallon of gasoline.

This life expectancy story is going to have to called for being bogus . If you are thinking about farm tractor engines gas vs diesel or vehicles Up to the 1990’s . Back then the diesel WAS the hands down winner.
The chassis is going to be rusted out , worn out and shook apart before a gas engine wears out . 300,000 on an unleaded burning injected emissions gasser is not unusual .
The million mile stories are the very rare exception or bogus claims . Certainly not typical service of the typical light diesel truck on the road today.
Now let’s leave the past and move back to 2019. As for your Tier IV emissions diesel making 300,000 miles without $$$ service . oh please make us all laugh ourselves until our sides are sore .
The cost to the owner after the factory warranty expires on Tier IV diesel .the cost is prohibitive . For just the cost of a set of diesel injectors , you can purchase an entire new gas crate engine .
Even routine diesel service for filters and oil changes is expensive .
If 355HP or 420HP from a gasser is not enough . You need to look at your driving style . It wasn’t very long ago that a 318 hailed 40 tons of freight cost to coast over tow mountain ranges . And nobody was insulted .

. We are talking about purchasing a 2019/2020 Tier IV emissions diesel . The conversation IS NOT about a 1990痴 non emissions Cummins.
btw how many times was the suspension rebuilt on those Dodges?

With enough gears you can pull anything with limited hp although you won’t be a speed racer.

I can’t speak for others but I can justify the diesel over gas in my situation quite easily. I traded a 2013 2wd Tundra for a 2018 4wd 2500 Ram Cummins. Fuel mileage-the Ram, empty, gets 1.5 mpg better than the Tundra, but there is no real savings due to diesel being higher. Basically a wash. That is the closest the two come in assisting me in my situation. I have a small civil contracting business. I was making multiple trips with the Tundra to move equipment AND paying to move equipment in excess of 10k lbs. I have saved myself an average of $800/mo by being able to move my equipment in one trip and not needing a contractor to move heavier equipment. Safety-the Ram handles the loads and stops the loads much quicker and safer than the Tundra. The exhaust break is extremely helpful. Cost to change oil is cheaper. I do my own oil changes and so far have saved $20 over the Tundra oil change, not to mention time as the Tundra had a skid plate to remove. My time is not cheap. Fuel filters are pricey, but so are spark plug changes. That being said, it is more expensive fuel filters (every 15k) vs plugs (every 100k). The emission nonsense is a negative, but I will be deleting after warranty expiration. Due to the reduced costs, my bids are less resulting in more jobs. More jobs, more money and a better financial security for my family. The gas engines have there place, just not in what I do. It has nothing to do with driving style in my case. Can’t speak for others. Yes, 318 Detroits ruled the road at one time, but have simply been outpowered and deemed inefficient by more modern diesels. As for life expectancy, in my opinion, the diesels last longer due to their ability to produce power low in the rpm band, unlike gas engines. Higher constant rpm means quicker wear. Again, I can only speak on my situation. Not an expert by any means, just know the facts in how they pertain to me.

I think you shoild live on the other side of Lake Huron because you have too much drama for the east side.

Are these points opinions of yours or do you have sources that estabished your points?

Google "Cummins million mile club". I realize many folks rather hear what makes them feel good and not the facts.

Here is a million mile diesel duramax. Dude posted when he was 10,000 miles away and then again when he hit it. He uses it to install playground equipment in a multi-state area, so most of the miles are on the highway while towing a trailer.

10,000 left.

With the odometer stuck at 999,999. How frustrating would that be!
