Thanks guys. I need to do some more research. Not familiar with IPTO. However, I can confirm that it does not have the two test plugs near the gear shift levers, as mentioned by DLTTrekkers.

Is the real Deere mechanics manual considered to be the best? It's ~$100 so just checking if there are any better aftermarket manuals.

The tractor does have several inspection ports with soft (steel) covers. Once I get a manual and familiarize myself with the workings, I'll open it up and see what we can see.

I've owned a JD 4255 since '93. I was employed at a JD dealership in several departments including sales & service from '66-'87. I sold brand new 20, 30 & 40 series tractors including 2040's. ALL JD utility tractors with 540 rpm pto in the 20-55 series had a pto disconnect by the operators left heel when seating in the seat. IIRC mid pto models had an extra lever on LH side also. Open station models with hyd ind pto also had a control lever between the 2 gear shift levers.

Is there a 3rd lever with your gearlevers one you can put up ? With engine dead 3rd lever wil not stay up ? At your left heel is there another lever shifting from front to rear ?

I've been around enough Dubuque & Mannheim 3 and 4 cylinder Deeres to know with certainty that whether a tractor has IPTO or a two stage clutch has nothing to do with whether or not a particular tractor has a mechanical PTO disconnect in the rear end housing. Either type can have it, and most that I have driven, worked on or looked at did. Maybe even all of them, but I try to stay away from absolutes.
