I have all the common stuff. Three 12Ga shot guns one with a scope, a 20Ga shot gun, a 22 semi auto rifle with scope, 40 cal Glock, 9 mm Taurus, 380 Makarov, ect.

I am in the market for a cheap fun to shoot 22 pistol to teach the kids with and for me to play around with while not spending $100 in ammo in 20 minutes. Is there something out there that you guys and gals could recommend that will shoot 22 longs. It can be semi auto or revolver. Never owned a revolver but may be neat. I don't want to break the bank but I don't want junk either. I would prefer it be a short barrel, maybe 4" or so. That way the kids can handle it just fine (with my supervision).

Again, I want it to shoot 22 longs. First off I have well over 20,000 shells in my gun safe. Bought them on sale once. For that matter I have tons of ammo for all the other stuff I own also but not nearly that much, maybe 300 to 500 shells for each of them. The other reason for longs is they are cheap and easily found in a wide variety of loads.

Look at the Ruger Mark III. Lots of fun. Get one with adjustable sights. Good luck.

Would the kids be able to pull the trigger on a double action revolver without first cocking it?

For newcomers the revolver may present a few more safety factors??

Top choices for me would be (in no particular order)... Ruger Mark III, Browning Buckmark, Ruger Super Single Six (SA revolver), OR if you think you want to upgrade later you can look at the Sig Sauer P226/P229 '22 Classics' (you can buy a new slide/barrel in a center fire caliber later on if you want to upgrade)

I have no idea how they start police recruits now, since Dallas issues Sig Sauer P226 semi-auto 9mm pistols to officers. But in 1964, when they issued .38 spl. revolvers; either Colt or S&W (depending on which one bid lowest), they started recruits shooting the S&W model 18 Combat Masterpiece .22 revolvers. I really like that gun, but had no idea they'd gone that high on price.

If you can find an older Dan Wesson .22 revolver, I'd say
get it. VERY strong, accurate, and "bullet proof":D

If not, a Ruger Mark II or III semi-auto.

I bought years ago used SW 22A, because it was cheap. It grew up on me, it is fun to shoot, I scoped it with Monarch 2x and it is very easy to blast away half a brick in one range session.

I must have put through it over 10 000 rounds and God knows how much it shot before me - still it repeats, it has a decent accuracy and - did I mention it is fun to shoot?

With Kids involved, I like the Colt Single action revolver. I have one in chrome finish and one finished natural. I do have the extra Mag cyl for both. They are safe and very accurate. I think I gave about $100 each for them new in 1978. A penny at 25 ft is no problem. Ken Sweet

The Ruger Mark III Hunter is a sweet pistol. I've easily run 20K rounds through mine.
