Walter makes a nice P22 gun, I dont have one but a friend just bought one for his daughter and its pretty neat gun.. Shots well and it comes in some different colors for the kids/ women. We out 500 rds thru it and it worked fine. I personally own a Ruger II with the bull barrel. It drives tacts so ditto on what everyone else has said...

I like others have used owned and or fired most of the popular mentioned guns here. I have 2 Browning Buck marks now, so much fun just to play with... :D :) I can go through 20 rounds in about 12 seconds at a can at 20 feet from the hip the can dont stand a chance! heeheh Cans are pretty wily critters ya know ;) Sure can absorb some damage too. I bought my first for 229.00 new S.S. bbl and picked up the 2nd very lightly used Blued for 129.00 out the door. My GF also has a nice LLAMA 380 that while more expensive to shoot is also fun. There is a dual safety grip on it & I got it for her when her girls were 8 / 9 years old. I taught them later to shoot on the Browning Buckmarks
way back in the day it was rugar markIIs & quick draw with my brother. (I bought the 2nd Browning for him & got it back when he passed.) He taught me to shoot BB guns and sling shots from the time I could get around on my own...

Top choices for me would be (in no particular order)... Ruger Mark III, Browning Buckmark, Ruger Super Single Six (SA revolver), OR if you think you want to upgrade later you can look at the Sig Sauer P226/P229 '22 Classics' (you can buy a new slide/barrel in a center fire caliber later on if you want to upgrade)

I second the choice of the Ruger Single Six. Many years ago I use to go to the Range with Dad(27yrs. with DPD) who was an execellent pistol shot. After he was finished he'd let me shoot his .38 snub nose. Needless to say I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. A few years later I decided I needed to work at becoming a better shot with a pistol and bought a Ruger Single six. It is the simplest of design and function, and is great for teaching kids and women safety and marksmanship. I started the boys and wife out on the gun and they all learned well. Wife perfers to plink with it over any other weopon, and the kids like the old west look of it.

I've had a P22 for 5 years. Been a very reliable, accurate gun so recommend it. However I don't know if longs would work, I have only used long rifles.

how interesting... single shot rifle for me at 12, but by the time I was 14, it was remington nylon 66 autoloading rifle, and Colt Woodsman ( a beautiful, if intricate, semi-auto pistol) for me. by 15 had my own, .357 Herters revolver, then on to .44mag. I guess it is all how you grow up and are trained.

My Dad's thinking was a single shot rifle was something I couldn't point at myself by mistake and one shot capability is less dangerous in the hands of a kid than an autoloader. Plus, the one shot teaches you to make your one shot count.

You have to be cautious. One kid was allowed to shoot an Uzi at a range. He wasn't ready for the recoil. It swung back and blew the top of his head off.

Of course, both the Nylon 66 and the Woodsman are sought after collector's items now. Part of me says to the OP--don't go cheap, but then I see the point of saying get them something that fits them now.

You mention you have a Glock .40. How about an Advantage Arms .22 conversion. It uses the stock Glock frame, just pull the slide and replace with kit's slide and of course use the .22 mags. I have played with a few and they are way impressive. Price is around $300 and it provides good training for the .40 cal gun.

Next to that, Smith model 41's are great but rather expensive. As lots of folks have mentioned the Ruger MK's are OK, but a bit crude. Stay away from the Sig Misquito. The Walther and Berettas are nice.

A friend taught his kids to shoot on a Ruler Bearcat; smaller frame than the Single Six. The Single Six is small for me; I am inaccurate with it. I like larger frame revolvers.

I learned to shoot on black powder. I like to teach on single shots first. Learn basics, then move up.

I would also recommend the local 4H shooting programs, as well as youth programs at the local range. Even here in Calif, our local ranges have youth programs.

I have a Browning Buckmark also and would highly recomend it if your looking for a semi-auto. Adjustable triple dot sights. A real nice pistol.

I have both the Ruger pistol and revolver, both in stainless, They are way over built for their caliber and will last generations. With the single six you can get the .22/.22mag version with interchangeable cylinders.

My 12 year old has a great time with them, perfect for teaching kids about guns and fun for adults to "plink" with as well.

I'm not a huge fan of all Rugers line but I think they have the .22 market sewed up IMO.

I went to one local gun store today and took a look at a Mark III and a the Walter. Both nice guns but starting price of $400 caught me off guard. I really want something used and not pretty. That way if they dropped I wont blow my lid.

They both also looked big to me for the kids little hands. I need to go look at a very large gun store we have a few towns over. Its very popular and has tons of stuff. People come from states away to see it.
