Last year I bought my father a 335 garden tractor for his property. He mows about two finished acres at his primary residence at least once weekly and has another residence that he maintains about 1.5 acres. I bought him the 335 to replace an aging Gravely that had over 2000 hard hours on it. My dad likes the 335, but there are a few things he does not like about it. First, the RIO switch is awkwardly positioned and difficult to use; second, he feels it burns quite a lot of fuel - this has not gotten better with use; and third (this is my complaint) it is not that comfortable after sitting on a mid frame John Deere compact. I do still help him a lot, and it is not always possible to load my tractor up and drive it the 2.5 hours to his home. My question is: rather than keeping this machine, should I look at an X for him or a 2210? Does the 2210 mow in reverse without the RIO? Does it even have one? I have had three X series machines myself and thought they are a good bit nicer (although I really DO like the 335 OK). The reason I did not get him one to start was that initially he did not have a trailer and needed something he could haul in his pickup. Now that he has a tow trailer, he has new options. I realize the RIO still exists on the X, but it is less cumbersome to use. To me the 2210 would be a good option, but mainly for mowing it may be overkill. What are your thoughts? My father keeps claiming that he would like to till and plow with his tractor, but realistically I think he will just mainly mow. Although not pleasant to think about, my dad is in his 70's and may not be able to work in the yard for too much longer, so if I do anything, it would need to be something either I could use if he could not or could sell easily if my parents were not longer in need of it. In my area, the little garden tractors do not move that well--but I think it is a bit better where he lives.
