Fellow Posters,

Last year I bought my father a 335 garden tractor for his property. He mows about two finished acres at his primary residence at least once weekly and has another residence that he maintains about 1.5 acres. I bought him the 335 to replace an aging Gravely that had over 2000 hard hours on it. My dad likes the 335, but there are a few things he does not like about it. First, the RIO switch is awkwardly positioned and difficult to use; second, he feels it burns quite a lot of fuel - this has not gotten better with use; and third (this is my complaint) it is not that comfortable after sitting on a mid frame John Deere compact. I do still help him a lot, and it is not always possible to load my tractor up and drive it the 2.5 hours to his home. My question is: rather than keeping this machine, should I look at an X for him or a 2210? Does the 2210 mow in reverse without the RIO? Does it even have one? I have had three X series machines myself and thought they are a good bit nicer (although I really DO like the 335 OK). The reason I did not get him one to start was that initially he did not have a trailer and needed something he could haul in his pickup. Now that he has a tow trailer, he has new options. I realize the RIO still exists on the X, but it is less cumbersome to use. To me the 2210 would be a good option, but mainly for mowing it may be overkill. What are your thoughts? My father keeps claiming that he would like to till and plow with his tractor, but realistically I think he will just mainly mow. Although not pleasant to think about, my dad is in his 70's and may not be able to work in the yard for too much longer, so if I do anything, it would need to be something either I could use if he could not or could sell easily if my parents were not longer in need of it. In my area, the little garden tractors do not move that well--but I think it is a bit better where he lives.

The 2210 does mow in reverse without the use of any switches or levelers. I had a X series unit and returned it under JD's 30 day satisfaction guarantee for the 2210. Very, very pleased the decision. The 2210 is a great machine for the money.

I traded my 345 for a X585 and now have the 2210. If all I ever was going to do was mow I would have been happy with the 345. The idea of using a loader and tiller made me trade up to the X. It was like night and day. The extra traction of the 4wd allowed cutting the short steep slopes I have instead of by weed eater. The main reason I traded to the 2210 was loader and 3 pt capacity. The X series is very expensive to upgrade with a loader and the 3pt/PTO. It will take a Johnny Bucket Sr though and for $1400.00 may be worth it. If I had traded from the 345 straight to the 2210 I would have saved a bundle of money. Just something to think about.

I agree- just got my 2210 and was overjoyed that it would mow in reverse w/out any switches!

Let me just add that the X RIO is a pain also which the 2210 doesn't have. It seems to me to be so much faster with not having to remember to pull up that switch to reverse. I can't remember how many times I had to restart the pto after stepping on the reverse pedal too quick.

Just finished doing some mowing with my 2210. It does a good job and backwards, too. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif If you take the FEL off, with the power steering, it is very manueverable. Your father should have no trouble with a 2210. (My dad really likes mine).

What is "RIO" ? That is a TLA (three letter acronym) I have not seen before /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The RIO activation on the X series is mechanical; must take the factory at most 10 minutes of effort to install. Slide under one of your Xs and take a look. I used my X for snowblowing, and each session involved about 30 forward/reverse transitions. A RIO did nothing to ease the task or make it safer.
Your post points out the fallacies of the RIO issue; you get one with the X but not with a sub cut/cut. You’ll mow with both, but presumably (?????) will be inherently safer operating the CUT in reverse. Hope Deere someday will recognized the flawed logic----although when they do they’ll probably go the other way and design a RIO into the cut mowing decks.

On another issue, I am surrounded by ranchers that are in their upper 80's. You'd never guess to look at 'em. They keep active and working with proper tools, and it is like a fountain of youth.

If your dad would enjoy having a tiller and stuff to help him enjoy being active, it'd be woth every penny.

jcm7,

Given what you've mentioned, I'd go with the 2210; the resale will certainly be better. If you really want to get deluxe, then add the X seat and suspension. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
