Recently I had been putting out feelers on using a chipper with a 2210. There seems to be several on the market that would work, but there is another issue I didn't even realize (and confirm) until this weekend. That is, you can't use the rear PTO unless you are sitting in the seat. The seat safety switch kills the engine. This occurs for all PTO selection settings (mid, mid+rear, rear) whether you start out in the seat then get out, or if you stand next to the tractor and engage it.
I did a search in the archives to see who had possibly been using a chipper with their 2210, I didn't find anyone who has done so. If there is anyone using their 2210 tractor as a power source for other rear PTO attachments e.g. generator, log splitter w/PTO pump... I'd like to hear what you have done to work around this "problem".
On a side note, I did read in the archives about someone who's neighbor was using a chipper with a BX2200. Do the Kubota's allow you to use the rear PTO without sitting in the seat?

I remember something about either a switch under the seat, or it would run with the seat flipped up. This was on the 4000 series machines, but worth a shot on the 2210.

Does the owners manual mention anything?

On my 4100, you pull up on the seat switch. Note that this works with the rear PTO only.

hazmat,

I run a PTO generator with my 4300.

For the 4000 series:

1) Brakes locked
2) Mid PTO disengaged
3) Must engage PTO after leaving the seat.
4) If something activates the seat switch, the tractor will shut off when it is de-activated.

Hope that this helps. I can't imagine designing a tractor that has a power take off and is unable to be used for a stationary application.

hi

Lift up your seat, there is a wire going to the middle of the seat, unplug the connection and it will run fine. I usally don't like to disconnect saftey features but I don't see much choice to run a chipper.

That was my thought as well. I was preparing to reply along that line but checked the 2210 on-line manual first. It specifically states that the rear PTO is not designed to be operated without someone in the seat.

last night walking through the barn passing my 2210 this post went through my mind. So, I tried all the combiniations stated, seat up, seat up brakes on, brakes on seat up unpluged safety switch, in all cases the tractor shut down when the PTO was engaged. Looks like i will need to spend some more time with this to find a fix other than putting a big brick in the seat.

JimD,

I never found a way to temporarily bypass the switch and settled for using a 13-year old boy in the seat when I used the gun on my PTO sprayer. Seems like an oversight/shortcut on JD's part. I think with a little ingenuity a guy could set up a temporary bypass, but I wouldn't recommend a permanent one. Of all of the safety devices on a tractor I think the belt, ROPS and dead-man are the only valuable ones. Without a bypass designed in, I think too many people will disable the entire system. Big mistake on JD's part /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Well I don't have any kids to put in the seat, and I've done the brick-in-the-seat thing before on my last mower. Neither of which is a real good thing to do. I do think there ought to be a satifactory solution to this oversight.
I also believe the PTO switch is poorly placed to operate the rear PTO only (while dismounted). It'd be hard to reach to shut it off in an emergency and it's pretty inconvienient otherwise.
I think that any other solution should incorporate a second switch, possibly under the seat, but that doesn't seem like a very safe or convienent place either. At the very least the tractor should not start if the switch is left in the on position. Another possible safety condition might be that it would shut down the engine if the seat switch was activated by sitting in it.
I'm not familiar enough with the operation of the larger tractors to know what safety conditions exist for those. Why would it be any safer to operate them as suggested? Obviously they are set up to do so.

I could be wrong but I'll bet that OSHA had something to do with the setup on the 2210.
