Oil & Fuel 2305 break in and oil change

I don't believe Mobil 1, 5W-30 meets the CI-4. I'm sure it will work but if you look at the specs on their synthetic full diesel oil Turbo Truck oil 5W-40 you will see it meets the Deere criteria. The problem is that the 5W-40 is a heavier viscosity and Deere recommends running at the 30 weight viscosity. I made this mistake too. If you look at the bottle of 5W-30 you'll see it says "...and diesel engines in the following applications." In those apps. it doesn't show E3, CI-4 or API CH-4 which Deere specifically states in their manual.

Amsoil has a 5W-30 diesel oil specifically designed for diesels that meets Deere's criteria.

I'm going to order some myself.

As a note I do use Mobil 1, 5W-30 in my gas engine 2006 car.

I figure that changing yearly (approx. 100 or less hours instead of the 200 they say to change at) is okay for Mobil 1.

I was using Mobil 1 in my diesel Benz until last change. Couldn't find 5w40 Mobil 1 again. So, I used 5w40 Rotella synthetic.

My mind is having the same issue. I have come up with this schedule. Please feel free to correct me if I am way off base.
Dealer said to leave break-in oil in the engine for 200 hours as the manual says. I think a change at 50 hours for both the oil and filter and then refill with break-in oil would be the way to go (for me at least).
However, as has been stated, break-in oil is not multi-viscosity and I live in Vermont where winters tend to get a bit cold, so I have come up with the following thinking but need to know if I am way off base.
Change the oil to a standard multi-viscosity oil at about 35-40 hours to get rid of the junk in the engine. Then in the spring go back to break-in oil for the remaining time period. This oil will not be in the engine for a long time, probably not more than 15 hours before returning to break-in oil.
What problems do you see with this?
Thanks guys
Al

Does your manual specifically state 200 hours? My manual (2320) states 50 hours change tranny and engine oil plus filters.

I wouldn't worry about the engine running break in oil in cold weather. Remember the engine is breaking in and if you're only running 15 hours through the winter I personally don't see any harm. My winters are harsh too but not everyday is 20 below. Lots of days are in the thirties too.

In can't find any referance to the first change in the manual. I just got back from my dealers and found that John Deere break-in oil is 10W-30 multi-viscosity so that not an issue. I will change the filter and oil at 50hrs anyway just to get rid of the junk that may be left from the cleaning process.
I am going to keep looking for the first change shedule in the manual.

Update from the book on the 3X20 series

Every 200 Hours
Change engine oil and filters

Every 400 Hours
Change transmission oil and filter

I'm still changing everything at 50 hours first time around.

Al,

Look in your book (if you haven't already) under 'Service Intervals'. My 2320 book specifically states "After First 50 Hours" to change the engine oil and filter AND the tranny oil and filter.

After this point it's 200 hour intervals like you have stated.

I'm going to run Amsoil Synthetic HD Diesel 5W-30 in my engine after the 50 hour mark.

Page 46 & 47 of the 3X20 manual are the Service Intervals pages. They only state what I listed above. The only ltems listed under 50 hours are...
Check front axle oil level
Lubricate machine
Check cab protection system mounting hardward torque
Clean or replace cab air filters

Nothing else.

I have a outlet here for Amsoil which I use in my truck. I am also going to use Amsoil Synthetic HD Diesel 5W-30 but following my dealers suggeation to wait until the engine has run 100 hours on the break-in oil.

Hi:

I have a 2305 and a 3320 and the intervals ARE different. the initial service on the 2305 is 50hrs and the 3320 I do believe is 200 (Don't ask me why). On the 2305 I waited until about 80 hours (What all the dealers were telling to wait for). I never had to add engine oil in all those 80 hours. I plan to go to synthetic but am going to wait until 200hrs to let everything fully break in.

I think 200 hours is a good idea if you are going to use synthetic oil. Yesterday my dealer said 100 hours is OK if you use the engine hard (over 2000 RPM's) most of the time. If not he said 200 would be better. Since most of my use is over 2000 RPM's I will go with some where over 100 hours.
