John deer 2305
So,like the title says my tractor not charging. Battery is good connections are clean. The alternator is puting out 30.86 amps ac. I'm not geting any thing out of the rectifier. I have continuity between the hot and neutral posts of the rectifier ac in.

My guess is the rectifier is shot John deer wants 147 bucks for the part amozon wants 25 ????

I'm not a macanic by any means, and I know much less about electrical, dose it seam like I'm on the right track?
And why such a discrepancy on parts price.

One last thing I can read the battery all the way back to the rectifier. That seams wrong.

As you can tell I don't know enough about all this to even know what questions to ask

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

The first question is, and this is important, where are you located? Generally speaking. Because if you're in Wisconsin with that blizzard and the sub-zero temperatures then that cold be a factor. If you're in Yass, NSW, then the +30C temps could be a factor.

Enjoy the site.

This has been going on for a year, or more... I thought it was the alternator and would just charge the battery up the night before I needed it. I found a guy who repered altenators and took it to him. When he told me it was good I started hunting the next possibility.

OK. My next question is can you jump start the tractor and, if so, does it stay running until you shut it off?

I don't know your tractor but it appears from internet search to be a small one with small gas engine?? When my Gravely with the Onan engine had charging problems, Gravely wanted $275 for the rectifier and some other parts.. I put a $10 rectifier on (had to splice some wiring), works great and that was more than 10 years ago..

If I recall, some charging circuits require the headlights to work (always on) before they charge properly.. I think my Scotts mower with Kohler engine is that way.

Yes I can jump start it and it will stay runing

It's a 23 hp diesel engine Koler I think

You have a Yanmar diesel in the 2305, 3 cyl 24 hp

How old is the battery?

The one on it now is a few days old. It the secound battery sense it has stoped charging

Many times a rectifier has 3 wires coming in from the stator, a ground and red wire. You want about the same resistance between the 3 wires (3 tests). You don't want your positive wire to have continuity with the ground. Now, test the diodes on the 3 stator wire connections by using the ohm meter. Test each one to the ground connector and they should be closed. They should be open to the red side.

When the tractor is running, what are you getting for voltage at the battery? If you get 9-10 volts There is safety relay and a diode that are a common problem that cause a no charge with the 2305..

I only have two wires coming from the altenator ( stator?) going into the rectifier.

It's puting out 30 amps all the way into the rectifier. The two wires I assume are hot and natural going in the rectifier have continuity in the rectifier.

I'm not geting any thing to the battery power flow stops at the rectifier and I'm sure that's the problem I was wanting to know how to test it. Are if there might be another reason for power to stop

If you jump the tractor and it’s running have you put a meter across the battery?

Yes it reads the same as when it wasent runing

I rearly jump the tractor I charge the battery With a charger I try to keep the battery charger up

Your rectifier is bad or its connections are corroded (most probable).

Could be but I would also check the diode and safety relay behind the dash, a lot of people had trouble with the connections and replaced the rectifier to find there was something wrong with the diode or relay.. Corroded terminals could be the problem as well at any of the above..

I have had a similar issue with when I had a 2305. If the engine got too hot, the rectifier would blow. I could smell that the rectifier was burnt. I had to replace a diode and rectifier. I purchased a cheap rectifier off of Amazon. It worked. I sold the tractor last yr. Good luck.

Three other threads are showing in the "Similar Threads" at the bottom of this page.. all appear to be about the 2305 charging issues. Did not open any of them, but might be worthy of a look. Last replies were in years 2012, 2016, and 2018
