2305 Spring Maint.

At 95 hours I pulled my oil and filter. Oil was pretty clean considering it's original oil. The oil filter I needed to borrow a smallllllllllll filter wrench, and then had to stand on it to get it off. Factory must have used locktite on the gasket.
Hydraulic oil looks new and was at correct level. When I feel adventuresome I will re-read something about pulling a filter magnet or something like that, and will change fuel filter.
Had to buy JD oil for front axle.....none on dipstick. Wonder if JD ever filled it? Never used 4 wheel yet so I guess I didn't hurt anything.

On my 2320 they recommended the engine oil/filter change AND a hydraulic oil/filter change.. During the hydraulic oil change is when you remove the mesh filter in the rear end that has magnets to catch any metal in the transmission..

When you say you got ' JD oil' for the front axle - I assume you meant a 75w90 (or there abouts) weight GEAR oil and NOT engine oil.. there is a difference..

Yes, i used the gear oil. They suggest trans oil/filter change at 50 hours on my 2305, it will happen at 200 hours or this fall, whichever comes first. I believe at 50 hours you are throwing money away.... similar to people who still change car engine oil at 3000 miles. My engine oil was not black at 99 hours, actually it was light brown in color.

I did the 50 hr service and changed both oil and hydro fluid. I dont know about other 2305 owners, but my screen definitely had metal "film" and metal powder on all the magnets. Since I bought mine new I am keeping to maint. schedule ; just in case it needs warranty work down road. They cant say I did'nt keep to schedule. plus after you do oil change and libe ,you have to take tractor for run to make sure everything is good.

you should change your original factory oil at 50hours because it is a breaking oil and not a long running oil. check your manual and do the 50 hour service you will see the metal flakes and other things. that is why it called breakin oil. It also will void your warranty if you don't.

1*Yeah I can see how 31 v s 30 fluid & filter changes over a 10 year period would break the bank for most folks.
2*Its not the oil or fluid its the cutings we are dealing with .

It's amazing how some will risk a 15 to 20 thousand tractor for the sake of saving chicken feed on fliuds and filters.

I always buy from the dealer for oil and filters that way they have records that show i have been doing the maint. that way in the future i will not have a warranty issue.:thumbsup:

Another tip I learned on this forum is to change the front axle oil earlier than the manual states. I changed mine at approx. 100 hrs. (I think it recommends 200 hrs.) and I'm glad I did. If I remember correctly it was a grey/milky like color. Was super easy and only took a few minutes.

As stated, the hydro fluid change I also feel is more for the metal on the mesh screen and in the filter, rather than the fluid being "worn out". You'd be surprised at what that screen catches! My factory fill was red in color with the refill being brownish. If you bring it in for warranty service and the hydro fluid is red you may have a problem with them honoring the warranty. :thumbdown:

BTW, how much oil did you have to put in your front axle to bring it up to normal? And also (sorry fellow TBNer's, I have to ask!), are you putting dino or synthetic in your engine? :laughing:

I guess neither mechanical aptitude nor humor are your strong points. This is a good example of why I bought new. There are the people out there who don't read manuals, and here's one who might have read (some of) it but thinks he knows more than the engineers about their own product. :thumbdown:

OK, interesting thread. Yup, probably should have followed the service schedule and done the oil and filter at 50 hours, refilled with more JD break-in oil, and then done the full Monte, with regular oil/filter at 100, as per the book.

That said, it isn't the apocalypse. Gee Whiz.

At 95 hours, now, I would dump that break-in crud, re-fill with JD 0w-40 Syn, change the other fluids too, as per the manual, clean the screens, change hydro filter, check/replace the air filter, drain and re-fill the front axle, check all tire pressure, tighten loose bolts, etc. Lube what needs to be lubed and go on with life.

It'll be fine.

I do the maintenance on my 2305 by the book or better. There's no percentage in doing less. I use non-synthetic motor oil (Shell Rotella T 10W-30) and gear oil (Shell Spirax HD 80W-90). For hydraulic fluid it's Chevron 1000 THF.

Hi, ensoll,

I live on a part of the Big Island that actually has topsoil. It was once volcanic ash that has turned into a clay-like red dirt. In any case, the 2305 is used as a glorified lawn mower. I have a 4610 with front loader for minor earthmoving. We get about 200 inches of rain per year, so there's always work to be done managing the runoff and dealing with erosion.
