JD 2305
I bought my 2305 in Dec. and had it delivered with R4's due to the fact I was hoping for snow and mud and all that. No such luck so, now it is spring and 99% of my tractor work involves driving across turf. I was thinking that I should put on a set of R3's turfs and switch back to R4's in the winter. I can get a full set of turfs put on turn key for $265.00. Guy said he would switch them back for $8.00 per tire when ever I wanted. What do ya'll think? My business is lawn maintenance and I can't for see needing any heavy traction before winter. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Easy,

About the only dislike I have with my turfs, is, when it is muddy out, they load up (now I have yet to get stuck, but when I drive on paved surfaces afterwards, they spray a trail everywhere and for about a week! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) If it were me, I'd do what you say, but if you could talk the MRS. into a second set of wheels too, then the deal would be smokin'

I don't have a very nice lawn, but I do have a much heavier tractor and live in a very rainy area (soft squishy grass).
Unless I do sharp turns with the steering locked or nearly locked, no noticable damage is done to my lawn with R4's.
In 4WD I have to be a bit more careful... but still, the R4's on my tractor seem really tame.
I don't know how the tread patterns compare or the pressure per area figures work out, but I thought I'd add my experiences.

Maybe you should do a couple of high speed laps in the yard to test out the R4's /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I have the r4's on my 2305. The spaces between bars is not as bad as r1's so they shouldn't be bad. I plan on using them for the summer mowing too. The 2305 has excellent front end geometry, it's something the JD cuts have had over some of the other brands for awhile. Even at full steering lock (in 2wd) the front tires just roll along and don't really tear up the ground. It is due to correct ackerman and caster/camber settings in the front end, try it before you worry. Also, by switching tires on the rims every year, you are making it difficult to load the rear tires with fluid. Tire loading on the 2305 is a big plus as this tractor likes rear ballast when using the loader.

Easy-- I had set of R1's and turfs on my 2210--mowed all last year with the R1's, really didn't notice much tearing etc., as long as I didn't make sharp turns going uphill in 4wd. I would go with the suggestions of trying it first, and you might find that the turfs were a little lacking when you went to use the BB and loader in the middle of one of your projects.

Easy,

I bought my 2305 with turfs on it and tried it out for a couple of weeks in January. It was soft enough around here and I got stuck (in mud) so bad when using the FEL to clean snow that my freind with GMC diesel had to pull me out.

I went ot my dealer and got him to swap for R4's. I have been out there recently doing some dethaching, rolling and aerating and have not noticed any damage to grass at all. Mind you if you put it in 4wd and turn sharp your going to kill grass, but in 2wd and turing normally you should be okay.

When you want to tackle some dirt / mud for FEL work you'll be happy you have the R4's vs. turfs.

That's my 2 cents. got to go now suns out and I have more detaching, rolling (playing) to do.

Cheers /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi:

I mow about 5 acres on a 2305 with loaded R4's and the 200CX Fel (I take the bucket off) and unless the ground is soggy don't do any damage (2wd). I can see light tracks just barely where I may turn continuously the last few laps, but other than that things are fine. In 4wd turning tightly (The front axle is geared to turn slightly faster so it will tear) you'll do a little damage but you'd probably do it with turfs also.

This will be my second season mowing and I had figured originally I might have to buy a set of unloaded turfs with rims to swap on/off but I haven't seen the need yet.

I would definately go the rim route if you do decide to trade. You can often find them on eBay, or tbn classifieds. That way, you can aswap them yourself and will break even compared to $25 plus having to haul them in to have the tires changed.

I wanted to get a set of back-up rims with R4 tires. When I plan on doing a lot of FEL work, I could switch to the R4s. My dealer gave me a quote for the assemblies (the individual parts were more). The total cost for NEW front rims and rear rims with R4s was almost $1300!!! .....I bought a ballast box.

Thanks to all, I think I'll stick to what I have for now.
