The jumper cables were good. I measured 13.5 volts on the battery terminals when the jumpers were on. I think bp fick was right, the battery was very drained.

Agree it sounds like the typical battery failure. However, one thing to remember when troubleshooting battery and starter problems with a voltmeter. You can read 12 volts under no load with just the equivalent of a whisker of a wire diameter connection. Could be from dirty/corroded/worn/broken etc. wires or connections. That same 12 volt connection under load might read less than a volt, while back at the battery it still reads 12 volts.

JD755 good advice. I'd suggest disconnecting the battery and do a battery load test. If it's good, start cleaning terminals and power cable attach points.
There's been some comments about JD batteries being poorly made. My original JD lasted two years. It was charging to 12v but was too weak to turn over the engine. In contrast my truck battery has lasted 11 years, my car battery lasted eight years and so did my motor cycle battery.
