Jaylegger: Same problem with my rotator, pulled it off, took it apart, many oz. of water came out, armature will not even spin, too much rust inside. One of the brushes also stuck and does not even contact the armature--more rust! Wish me luck, currently in process of cleaning and attempting to get motor functioning again. Your picture is the same as my actuator, how is the water getting in???

Hi, my unit must have been close to full of water as I was shocked at the amount that poured out. My armature rotation was a little sticky and though the brushes were very dirty they both function. On mine only one brush appeared to be spring loaded, the other is fixed in position. I doused everything with a spray contact cleaner and used a little steel wool on the contact areas which removed most of the grime and gunk. The armature spun far easier after the refreshment.

The gasket separating the two cases appears to be in good shape with no obvious signs of water ingress at that location so the only points are from the gear side of the case. It's either getting in around the edges of the backing plate or through the shaft exit point. I'll spread a little sealer around the plate tomorrow the eliminate that as a point of entry.

I'm going to head into Princess Auto tomorrow and pick up one of their window motors for $19 which appears to be direct match for the Massey unit and test it's RPM. That units model # 16631020 appears to be a very popular motor used in 1,000's of vehicles so hopefully it'll be a suitable spare just in case. One thing I didn't do prior to putting it back on the blower is count the number of teeth the gear is, I'm thinking it looked like 9 but if yours is still on the bench could you double check for me?

Here's a photo of the Princess Auto unit.

I picked up the Princess Auto motor shown above and a quick test shows it to be a 60 RPM unit. The OEM Massey has a 12 tooth gear while the PA has a 9 tooth gear which is irrelevant, what's important is the diameter which slides into a collar/bushing but the PA units diameter is too large to fit. Easiest thing to do would be to grind down the gear to the proper diameter. The electrical connector, though similarly a two pronged plug, is a slightly different design therefore new connector on the tractor would be necessary.

The pricing was 29.95 not $19 (had it mixed up with another) and may take it back as I just don't feel like messing with it right now.

So I pulled my motor off today... no water at all inside! The seal seemed to be intact, and the armature, brushes and bearing surfaces all looked very clean.

Apparently, the ice was in fact forming in the bushing areas; guess I got lucky!

My motor also looks like it might be a tad different- both brushes were "springed."

Froze to death taking it off & putting it back on, but when it was off I did notice that the spring-shaped driver was quite hard to turn manually. Added some grease to the armature bearings & put it back together, seems to work OK now.

Yours makes mine look like it's been through a few wars, wish mine looked that clean. You've now managed to avoid water in both your actuator and rotator motor. You keep your unit outside don't you? If so then not allowing the snow to melt around the motors is likely going a long way keeping your units dry. My tractor is kept in a garage, though non-heated in the run of a week it will commonly get above zero (32) in there allowing the snow/ice to melt off the blower.

I'm taking my unit off again tonight to take a look at the brushes again to ensure one wasn't just stuck, appreciate the feedback on that.

On a side note tomorrow I'll be ordering a joystick, necessary control box, and wiring, to hook up to the deflector and rotator motors. I use both constantly when blowing which usually lasts around 3 hours and I'm getting tired of perpetually being hunched over operating the switches which are located on each side of the dash so often I'm using both hands. The parts come from Bercomac, total cost probably around $120 but I'll gladly pay it for the convenience factor of one handed operation. Plus I need something to do, not much snow the last few weeks.

Edit: the brush was stuck.

Tried it again this AM (just about zero outside), and man, did it squawk! Apparently after the last session of blowing the somewhat slushy **** off the top of my driveway (from the street plow), wet stuff got into every moving part and then froze. Chute itself seems really tight if I try to rotate it. I'll have to park it in the sun to thaw it out. (It won't be that warm today for sure, but maybe sublimation will help me out here!)

When I had the motor inside I hooked it up to a 12V battery --just to be certain-- and it did run, in fact very smoothly, so the problem's definitely in the exposed hardware.

Jaylegger-- Glad you decided to check your brushes again- you most likely dodged a bullet later on!

Jaylegger I did this with my switches moved them close to the joy stick and it works good.I just have the rotator one set so I push it either to the left or right and the deflector either back or forward.Very easy to use one handed.Larry

Wish I saw your post earlier, I could have easily done something like that and placed the switches to the side of the seat but I was so focused on the joystick thing I overlooked the the easiest solution. Ordered the parts 1/2 hour ago so I'll stick with that. I'm figuring out how to mount the stick at this point, go with an armrest type setup of make a bracket to affix it to the cab side.

Jaylegger, Please post your part list and pictures when you get done. Both my switches are mounted on the right side of my dash so all thrower controls are operated with my right hand. I would like to figure out a way to mount them on the FEL shaft/handle. I'd like to be able to operate a joystick with my thumb while raising or lowering the thrower.

Yeah, jaylegger, I'd like to see your joystick when it's finished, too.

Got home from school today, and although the temp only got up to around 18, we had lots of sun. Saw some icicles hanging from the blower, so I figured the sun was able to get some junk out. (Glad my blower's painted black!)

On the first try a lot of ice crystals still popped out from under the drive ring, but then cleared up. Works fine now.
