Why do want to haul the old asphalt away? It will serve as a good base for the new driveway topping.

Break it up with the loader and then rent a small self propelled sheepfoot type packer to finish breaking it up.

These small packers will fit in the back of a P/U.

Another option would be to just pave over the exsisting blacktop. The contractor will do some moaning and groaning but it is a very viable option.

Its much easier to buy it already crushed up - at $2 per yd it sure makes the decision easier then doing all the work to break it up....I would never pave over exisitng blacktop -it always comes up first, agrigate goes down and compacted, weeks later blacktop

Im not following you but thats ok around here we use 1/2 to 3/4" recycled concrete agrigate. Once that gets pack down roller and use, it makes for a great frost heave free base for the 3" or more blacktop.

I have a 4115 with a 46BH. Will the BH actually work for breaking out the concrete? I would not have considered that. It works great for digging up tree stump.

You will be pleasantly surprised - Im surprised you didnt already have the 4115 & BH in mind for the job...

depending on thickness of concrete - if real thick start in a corner (dig underneath) and pop up a starting point

I would think that 2" thick asphalt would be no problem. I used our Kubota B2910 & BL4690B backhoe to tear up 500' of 20 year-old asphalt that was 4" to 6"+ thick. In places where it was cracked it was a piece of cake - where it wasn't it was quite a bit tougher but do-able.

If you had a longer driveway I would say use the old asphalt for base - that's what we did with ours - your's is kinda short tho'. I piled it up with my loader - the size of the chunks ranged from small to 3' x 3' - and then hired a local guy for a couple of hundred $ to come in with his 15,000 lb. Komatsu steel-tracked dozer and drive over it and spread it out. It took him maybe an hour and it was unbelievable how well it broke up and packed down.

I then topped it with crusher run to fill in the voids and lock it in. That was last fall and it has held up great. We'll probably end up chipping and sealing it eventually.

Thanks to all you folks for the ideas and advice. I've been out of town for a while and finally got a chance to read all of your replies. To repave my current driveway the old pavement definitely needs to be removed. If it were simply paved over, it would be higher than my garage floor (not good for drainage). The other problem is that the crushed stone base (and clay soil underneath)was not originally compacted correctly so it has sunk down several inches in some spots and crumbling. No question that a miniX or large skid-steer would be able to remove it very quickly, but my 2520 TLB is what I have so IF I DO IT MYSELF, that is what I will use (you have convinced me it is capable enough). The real question that I haven't answered yet is whether it will be any cheaper to arrange the haul-away vs. just have the paving contactor do the whole job. I think most paving contractors around here do re-cycle old asphalt that they take out. Also, most paving contractors will not garauntee their work unless they prepare the base as well. So, the bottom line is I need to get some quotes and see if it make sense to do any of mine myself, Probably won't do anything till spring anyway. I have not seen my work friend's driveway yet, but if he's already worked out the money details I definitely could use the practice!! Thanks again.

I would get a price for them to do it - also ask them if they just drop the black top (ask for 3" no less). For a 50' x 20' you will find it easier to do it yourself and save money. if you are putting in blocks for borders, that will add time and cost. My guess is this will price out at < $3500 with no block border from you contractor. From there you can price it out to do it yourself (minus the paving). Price the crushed concrete 10- 20 yrd max), debris container (20 yrd at least) and your time to do it....sounds like fun to me..and real easy
