The ORC (over running clutch) on the 2615 can get stuck if it takes a good hit while running a rotary mower. Especially if the operator has replaced the shear bolt with something tougher than proper. Like putting a 60 amp fuse where there should be a 15 amp fuse... But even without shear bolt issues, we have seen this a few times over the years on the 100's of 2615/2816's we sold that had this style ORC. (They went away from this style and went to a silent non-ratcheting type later....which was good and bad).

It has a spring setup inside that holds a coupler together. It has ramp shapes in one direction and straight cut in the other. When applying power to the PTO, the straight cuts are together. If the implement tries to power the tractor (such as in a rotary mower situation when you power down or de-clutch), the ramped portion rides up and makes that ratcheting sound. But if it hits the ramp going 90 mph, figuratively speaking, it chucks the one half of the coupler back so far that it gets stuck on the shaft where the machined portion is slightly larger. Rarely happens, but we have seen it a few times.

HST or gear model? I'm guessing an early HST model as they had this style of ORC.

If it is a gear model, that changes things. Open your fill plug for the transmission and look into the hole with a flashlight. Look at the top shaft, look towards the rear of the tractor. The shaft goes into a coupler. If any part of the shafts splines are showing then you have identified the issue as the shaft has come uncoupled that runs the PTO. In theory you can recouple it through the hole, but as a practical matter it is nearly impossible to squeeze back together. The replacement parts, if you do tear it down to replace, are a little different and do not ever come uncoupled. We've sold hundreds of 2615/2816 so we have seen this a few times. If you have a high volume dealer nearby he has probably seen it as well. Rare, but it happens. Typically you split the tractor, install the kit and button it back up.
