The coupler has an internal retainer clip. If it is sliding back and forth, you have not pulled the coupler and shaft together enough. It will clip in place. Push the shaft rearward into the coupler. If you need to split the tractor I'm not going to be able to detail out the steps for you in this forum. But you do not need to take off the rockshaft housing.

Well thank you for all your help I see inside oil fill hole the shaft and it has split from other side so I'm guessing I need to split tractor at clutch housing just in front of the oil fill housing so I can push shaft together? Thanks again

pw42, now that I have you on the right track, visit your local dealer and ask about the kit that solves this issue. You can just split it but the shaft might walk out again. Get your parts kit and ask him if he can give you a few tips on how it comes apart and goes together. It's not all that complicated, but it has to be split at the bell housing and then once again I think at the next casing. Might as well put the new improved parts in it. Good for you for being willing to tackle a project like this.

If you are just going to stick it back together with no new parts, then I'd scratch my head for a while and see if you can make a custom set of pliers to grab the shaft through the hole to push it back in place. I never went that route as we replaced with the new parts. But I'd think it may be possible to pull this off.

Called local dealer that's why I'm on forum he didn't know and has yet to call me back about price for new shaft. His mechanic has never worked on this pto.

I always try to push business to the local dealer. Our parts department can get you the parts if your local guy can't figure it out. If he calls the service rep they should know about it, or even the parts rep and then he could order it for you. I'd prefer that. They did not fail often and if your dealer did not sell a bunch of this model he has probably never seen the problem.

I think the part is the shaft, coupler and clip.

OK I hope I split this tractor in the right place so I can remove all the bad parts.

Let's just hope this job doesn't give you a splitting headache. If I had to do this on my own, I'd definitely pick up a repair manual.
