I thought about the fuel pump, especially when it wouldn't start when the outside temp was 70. I do not hear the fuel pump running. At least there used to be a clicking sound, which I assumed was the fuel pump, which I don't hear. The fuse for the fuel pump does not appear to be blown.

You could try following the procedure for bleeding your fuel lines and see if fuel is moving through the system. You should get a decent flow of fuel leaking when you do the bleeding. If your fuel pump isn't working (or is clogged) that would explain why your engine dies shortly after starting.

I guess you'll have to wait for your manuals to come. I wouldn't think the parts would be different from one year to the next. A friend of mine has an 06. I haven't look much at his but I know he has a different timer since his glow plugs stay on for a longer time period than mine. Sorry I couldn't be of more help and best of luck finding the problem.

If it won't start with 70 degrees AT, you don't have a glow plug problem.

You have either a fuel, air or compression problem.

You said something earlier about exhaust being black, is this only while cranking or was it just for the short time it ran ?

Black smoke from a diesel means lack of air. Check air cleaner and air pathways.

What is the procedure? Also, do you have any idea why the fuel pump would stop working at the same time that the glow plub light quit?

Re: black smoke. When I cranked the engine it would seem to fire for one or two revolutions then quit. The black smoke puffed out when it quit.

What is the procedure?
After checking the air cleaner, I would next check for fuel flow to the injector pump.

Start at the tank and work your way down confirming that you have flow at various check points.
(check point ie; tank petcock-liftpump-filter-and finally inj pump inlet. Pick the easiest to get to first, the direction you go from there will depend if you get fuel or not.)

That's OK. Any signs of white smoke while cranking and not firing ?

PROBLEM SOLVED!! Now, the question is, "What was the problem?" Here's the story that ended with the tractor starting and all the lights operating correctly. I disconnected the fuel line to check for flow. First, I checked at the input to the fuel pump. There was just a trickle. Then I mistakenly disconnected the line from the tank to the filter (I intended to disconnect the output of the filter); anyway the flow was fine and of course I got fuel oil all over myself. Then I thought, "hmmm, maybe the fuel wasn't flowing to the fuel pump because the starter switch was in the off position." There appears to be a fuel cutoff selenoid just after the filter. So I again disconnected the line to the fuel pump, turned the starter switch on and wahlla, the missing clicking (check one of my earliest posts) was back, fuel flowed fine (before there was just a trickle), and all my lights magically turned back on! (Maybe it was the abracadabra I was chanting.) So, all I can figure is that the fuel shutoff selenoid was stuck in the closed position and there must be a relay wired to that circuit which opens so nothing will operate if the selenoid is closed. Does anyone know about this?
