2wd r1 vs 4wd r4 for traction

   / 2wd r1 vs 4wd r4 for traction #11
hrcarver, I have R-ls on one tractor, R-4s on another. Yet a third tractor has the R-3 Diamond (fantastic mower tire) All 3 will spin out in mud. Yes the R-1 does the best, but still can spin. The R-4s are not great in mud, but they way outperform the R-3s. If I always used a loader, handsdown get the R-4s. Being in the fields, I think you need R-1s, also the least expensive of the three. The R-3 Diamonds do surprising well, but the ground needs to be firm. I find all 3 tire options require snow chains, and plenty of weight.

Anything to the rumor of r4's being more puncture resistant (sticks, rocks, deer horns, etc.) than r1's?

I could see it because the there seems to be less sidewall on the ground with r4's (well it makes sense in my head)

Typically R4s have a higher ply rating than the R1s thus having a higher puncture resistance.

R-4s are much more puncture resistant than R-1s. They also wear like iron going down paved roads. The R-4s on my rough terrain forklift are ugly and ripped but they refuse to die.
