If the inner and the outer shafts twisted at the same time/rate, they _might_ still telescope, no? Easy enough to find out. Just make sure the telescoping part is "good-n-greeeazy". _Might_ work until you can replace it, anyway.

Actually, you need a "worse" shear pin; well, a weaker one, anyway. Grade 2 bolt, right?

Hmm, we just took delivery on our JD 790. Half an hour on the clock on delivery. A few tenths just putzin' around getting used to it, but then we put 'er right to work (5' King Kutter, 20 acres). Dealer didn't recommend "babying" it at all. I was slowing the throttle here and there, just because I was getting used to it. The only "break-in" is an oil/filter change at 100 hours.

No shear pin. Inner is solid bar, twisted the outer only. It's been working, but I bought a replacement today with a radial clutch of some sort. No room for the slip clutch with disc, I'll see how this works.

I ended up mowing about 6 acres, twisting the pto shaft doing so. I think I'm past babying it at this point.

If you purchased a PTO driveline with a radial pin slip clutch you probably do not need a disc slip clutch in the drive line. I have one on my tiller and it will slip. Do not over grease/lube it though. It appears that by over greasing it "over pressures" the slip ring collar internal release mechanisms making it difficult to remove. Jay

I hadn't thought of getting both clutches. I didn't know about the radial pin slip clutch until today. Now the only thing I know about it is it takes up less space than the disc slip clutch.

They do take up less space and they appear to work sort of like a rachet. Do not over grease these units. Last year I could not get mine to release due to the pressure the grease was putting on the slip collar release band. I finally had to pull the slip clutch off my tractor's rear PTO stub with my 4X4 pickup truck. I did not have this problem this year as by the clutch's slipping during operation it released much of the grease pressure. It came right off :). Jay

I'll have to find a manual or drawing for this thing so I can see how it works. Thanks for the heads up.

Deere has a pretty good description of when and how to lube your new clutch.
Pick-up Slip Clutch Won't Slip or Slips Above Specified Torque

Thanks, that explains how to lube it. I still need to find an exploded drawing showing the inards. I started taking stuff apart at a young age, made the parents mad a time or two when the stuff didn't go back together again. Now I look for drawings and manuals.

Thanks for information. I wish I had this information before personal experience taught me. Jay
