I want to cut some swales through soft dirt using my landscape rake. I cranked the handle on the right side lift rod that lowers the right lift rod and in turn pushes the right side lower link down - this makes the rake slope downwards from left to right when facing the rear of the tractor.

However, this angle isn't very steep...is there any other way to increase the downward slope of the rake from left to right without installing a hydraulic tilt? I've seen some crazy angles in pics posted here but I think they all use hydraulics.

thanks.

A simple fix is if either vertical link has more than one place for the pin so you can change its length. Next would be a second adjustable link. However, if you can afford a hydraulic tilt you will gain much more functionality. If you put your adjustable link opposite the hydraulic one you can make large tilts in either direction quick and easy. Add the top control and get really happy.

CCM Machinery makes nice kits for Top n' Tilt. Do you have the hydraulic ports available to run two rear cylinders??

Maybe try some gauge wheels?

buyerjohn, did you try running your adjustment the other way? Often they will adjust one way more than the other. Then and don't miss this, rotate the rake where the lower end is the leading edge. Be sure it clears your tractor tire. That will make more difference than you think. Not sure how well this works on a rake (yes I have moved dirt with a rake but it is not smooth) but with a blade the dirt will roll up the hill for you. Ever notice a road plow? Same thing. At same time you don't want to over load the leading edge this way as the majority of the load is on that point.

You can cut large ditches with a angled straight blade. Just lower one side of 3ph raise the other, and put the blade on an angle to tractor so dirt will roll out of the way.

First pass wont be much, second may not be either. But the more you cut the more angle the tractor will be on. Put a set of tractor wheels in ditch, and the other on the pile of dirt you removed from ditch.

This may not make sense in reading, but try it. Each pass will make the ditch angle deeper and steeper since the angle compounds.

I did max out the angle with the crank handle...but rotating the rake to the rear tire made a big difference and then, as KT suggested, each pass makes the cut better...thanks guys...

Your probably already know this but speed also affects this. A little speed will cause the dirt to roll better with a blade, not sure with a rake. Glad you got the results to please you. 8934 made a great point on placement of wheel.
