I went to use my 3 point auger on my JD 4710 tractor for the first time in years.
Everything hooked up fine but when I drop the auger to the dirt it won't screw down to create the hole. The lift mechanism is totally dropped, it just wont dig in.
Any help would be appreciated.

Can you post a Photo of the tip of the auger? Is the pointy tip replaceable? Are we talking red clay dirt or rocky? (no location listed so just guessing).

Does your PHD have a way to slide a pipe in and add extra down pressure? Leinbach line like mine does... Again photo might help.

Try soaking the area with water to see if that helps....

Does the auger actually touch the ground, in other words has the three point hitch been adjusted not to lower far enough?

Thanks to all for responses. I'm enclosing a pic of cutter. Slight clay content in soil, otherwise sandy loam. I've tried uploading a video but can't get it to take. Bit spins, I've tried low speed, high speed. With bit tucked up under auger arm 3 point arms allow for full descent.

I have sandy loam over clay. When it gets hot & dry the ground gets like concrete.
As Old & Tired suggested, try soaking the area with water. If/when the bit actually digs in, let it run
for awhile, pull up slightly to eject dirt from bit BUT do not raise the bit completely out of the hole.
Keep repeating until desired depth or bit limit is reached. Good luck.

I picked up one of these (really not sure where I put it) I was planning to weld on the support "wings" but really never needed the post hole digger much after buying it. This is 1-7/8" there is another that's 2" shank... wonder if it would help.

Yep, that pointy spike on the end won't dig too well......
This auger from TSC will dig to China! 4 cutting edges, and the spiral tip.

I have very hard sandy loam / clay. These are very good for the price, plus the tips are all replaceable.
