3 point cultivators are not equal???

Let's start over.

My BX needs to straddle rows that are 40" apart, even row spacing. Single row cultivation. The KK cultivator is almost 5.5' wide by itself, so I need 40" rows to do single row cultivation. If I had an onion field or a corn field, I would/might cut that to 38", but it would be tough to be that close. You say your straddle clearance is 28", right? That sounds about right for a B. I can't see how a B is wide enough to straddle two rows. Your clearances would be deadly tight. This presumes single row spacing. Doubling up, as described above by charlz, is different and might be the way to go to maximize your ground, even if you don't irrigate.

I lay out my rows based on the width of my tires/tractor. You drive down, when you drive back one set of tires is in the tire rut/furrow of the first pass. Repeat until all the rows are laid out.

That is THE most practicle method I have ever heard!

THANKS!!!!!!

I lay out my rows based on the width of my tires/tractor. You drive down, when you drive back one set of tires is in the tire rut/furrow of the first pass. Repeat until all the rows are laid out. This gives you a row width of 'inside spacing' + 'one wheel width' or in your case 41".

Plant two rows into that nice 'raised bed' the tires leave behind and adjust the cultivator to fit the rows. Every time you go to cultivate you just need to keep the tires in the furrows.

BTW I till and then lay out the rows with furrowing shovels since we flood irrigate here.

That is THE most practicle method I have ever heard!

This system is nice. However, it provides the minimum spacing or average spacing. If the plants you will eventually cultivate are on the wider side of things, this method will make rows too close together. Great for 60% of the plants, but not every plant type. Still, a simple and effective way to get started. Our old Massey Harris Pony, similar to old Farmall type cultivating tractor could have spacing down to 38", but we always did 44". My dad was not the type to adjust his cultivators mid season. Thus, he spaced for the widest possible need, not the average need. Since we were truck farming 8 acres, he felt he could spare the room. Someone with a smaller garden might not wish to space that wide.
