I have a JD 5055D. The 3 point hitch will raise if not attached to anything. It will raise a 230 lb boyfriend :) but it will not raise my bush hog more than a couple inches off the ground. I have changed the hydraulic filter and added oil ( although i cannot see any change in the view circles). I have not tried to take off the screen yet. Should that be my next step? Is there anything else I can try? Thanks in advance !!

Welcome to TBN
Can you fill us in on the history, maybe how long it worked well and what things might have taken place before it stopped working well?

Thank you- it has been working fine for years, no issues. I have not used it over the winter and now have this issue. Nothing else to noted - other than a dead battery :)

I would start with the simplest tasks 1st which would include checking hyd oil level, changing hyd filter & checking/cleaning oil suction screen

^^^++

I also think its your internal screen that is plugged, I had a few tractors do the same thing after sitting for 6 months.
It seems that all the gunk in the oil settles to the bottom and gets trapped in the internal suction filter screen.

Welcome to TBN - bigskyfarmga. You can bet it's going to be a job where you will get oily. If that has not already happened. Sounds, to me, like a plugged internal screen.

I am having a hard time finding a wrench to fit... anyone know what size this would be for the cap screws on the filter?

Retaining bolts on screen cap are size M8

Got it. It was a 12. Called the dealer and the shop said that the paint will mess up the sizing - he was right. There is junk in my screen at the end. No idea what it is, possibly from an o-ring or other seal but nothing is obviously leaking. I am wondering if I should put it all back together and refill and see what happens or stop where I am and send it off to the shop. Dang it just can't be easy.

I'd clean the screen good (check the debris good for any identifiable parts for a clue) and also change the filter, then refill and hope it solves the problem. The shop likely would do the same to troubleshoot any problem.
Good luck and pls let us know.

Sounds like your doing pretty well ! since you already changed the filter and cleaned the screen I recommend just putting it all back together filling it with oil and it should all work like new again.

Thank you all. I have ordered a new screen ( drove 40 minutes to get one and they didn't have the correct one), once it is here I will put it back together and refill. I am hoping that the combo of the screen and the fact that it was over filled will solve the issue. The dealer didn't seem so confident, but we will see. Fingers crossed !!!

Make sure the draft control is not engaged.

I had this problem with my JD 4010 (like a 2019E if made today). They put the bottom pins in the wrong location. It made the top link have to be longer than the lift arms. This tended to drive the brush hog to the ground. Would lift the front quite a bit but would drive the tail wheel down such that it was barely off the ground. Relocating the bottom lift pins on the LX4 did the trick.

Unless the screen has holes in it, I don't see a need to replace it.
I usually just soak them in a little gasoline and a good brushing and put it back on.
