1533
Let's say one had their 3 point hitch at its lowest point.. and then put a tremendous amount of weight on said 3 point hitch. What would happen? Oh.. Massey Tractor 1533.

/ 3 point hitch problem #2
Nothing, until you try to move it?
Some specifics would sure help.
Like:
What's the 3pt capacity of the 1533?
How much tremendous weight is being loaded?
How far aft of the lift pins is the CG of the tremendous weight?
How much ballast is on the front of the tractor?
Is an FEL attached?

Oh, by the way - welcome to TBN!
This is a great place to get answers.

Let's say the experiment has been done... and now the 3 point arms are touching the ground and will not rise. Fix?

Answers to questions

What's the 3pt capacity of the 1533? not sure.. but enough to #$%# the 3 point hitch
How much tremendous weight is being loaded? not sure
How far aft of the lift pins is the CG of the tremendous weight? I don;t understand question
How much ballast is on the front of the tractor?
Is an FEL attached yes.. but not sure how this affects the 3 point hitch not working?

I am scared I have broken something mechanical? inside the tractor?

Well, you didn't say anything about it not working in your original question.
With any luck, the pump went into bypass and when you remove some or all of the weight the hitch will work like new again.
Or ... without any luck, you broke something.
A properly designed hitch/hydraulic system should be able to take any load and switch to bypass without doing any permanent damage - that's what the bypass is there for.

The weight was removed. Arms are still on the ground. If the hitch was at it's lowest point.. and then the weight was added.. is there still hydraulic pressure holding it there? Or is there some sort of mechanical thing holding it at its lowest point? I am praying for luck. Quite scared and upset that this could be a expensive fix. Although your response is giving me hope. How can i check to see if it is a bypass issue?

I also looked around.. but there is no good info on how the internal workings of a 3 point hitch work.

Did you try to raise the 3pt with the weight on it? I don't think you indicated that you did. You just said that you lowered it and then put weight on it. Frankly, the three-point should be able to lift the front end of the tractor up in the air before it breaks, under most circumstances. So let's say you put enough weight on the three-point to bend an arm or something. My thought is that the front end would lift up until the weight touched the ground. No damage done.

If you tried to raise the three-point with excessive weight on it, then as Baby Grand pointed out, the hydraulic system should go into relief. If you continued to try to raise it, eventually they hydraulic pump would overheat and be damaged, similar to if you were dead-heading a pump. To do this, you would have to put weight on the three-point, then raise the position lever, then just leave it there while the three-point failed to raise and the pump whined. But again, under most circumstances, even then, I would expect the front end of the tractor to go up rather than everything to sit stationary.

At least that's my amateur's interpretation. Do the other hydraulics on the tractor work? Power steering? Loader?

Some more specifics would be helpful. What exactly did you do? What exactly did you put on the three-point?

/ 3 point hitch problem #8
Yea, you really need to be a bit more detailed.

At its lowest point, it usually stops mechanically, not hydraulically.

When the weight was applied to the 3 point hitch.. I did not try to raise it. The weight was applied.. it held for about 10 seconds.. then the whole load collapsed to the ground. The arms suddenly gave way and they went to teh ground. The front end of tractor never went up. The other hydraulics on tractor are working.. power steering yes, loader yes

If Sounds like you broke something.

WHAT was the weight you applied????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

/ 3 point hitch problem #11
Errr. That sounds bad. Hope it's not.
Did it make a loud noise when it dropped?
Is there hydraulic oil dripping anywhere?

This question's for the hydraulic experts:
Does an overloaded cylinder just move or do the seals blow out and then it moves?
If it's the seals, then the damage shouldn't be to expen$ive ... provided the cylinders are external to the gearbox ...

Okay, so when you applied the weight, the 3ph was not at its lowest point. That changes things. Yeah. Sounds like you broke something. Maybe blew out a seal in your hydraulics? Look for leaking hydraulic oil?

You never answered my other question: do the tractor's other hydraulics work? Steering? Loader?

/ 3 point hitch problem #13
You still have not actually described what it was you were trying to lift and how you applied it to the 3ph.

a pallet of weighted material. What holds the 3 point hitch at its lowest level? Can someone describe how this works?

The 3 point hitch was at its lowest level when this happened. Yes.. the other hydraulics are working.

If the other hydraulics are working, then that would seem to rule out the (admittedly unlikely) scenario that you somehow damaged your hydraulic pump. So that's good. Have you got any leaking hydraulic fluid coming from the three-point lift cylinder?

PS: Any time a more knowledgeable TBN member wants to step in and take over this troubleshooting, feel free. I'm only helping because I seem to be slightly more knowledgeable than BirdMan. But I know there are folks here who are way more knowledgeable than me.

There is no hydraulic fluid leaking

Why are u being so secretive of what happened?! Tells us the whole story so we can help.

You may have broken a link pin, etc inside the lift.

/ 3 point hitch problem #19
The reason people are being so pushy about asking what exactly you put on your hitch is because they can estimate the weight of it and give a reasonable guess as to whether you overloaded your hitch or not. You keep saying, "A pallet of material," or, "something very heavy." What was it? Landscaping tile? Bricks? How much?
