3 Point Plug Core Aerator

What would you all think about using a spiker/aerator instead? I just bought a five foot (368 lb), spiker from Everything attachments that can be filled/drained with water that is 3 point....brand new $895. I figure it is heavy enough as is and can be used on my 3 acres to reseed after all this drought damage. It should be maintenance free and handy over the years versus renting something big enough to do the job. Like many attachments, one just uses it ocassionally, but still might be just as efficient as a plugger and a little less costly..... I drag the area, seed and fertilize then roll it...hope for rain. Sorry to rain on your new purchase but in all the research I have done I have found that spikes compact / compress the surrounding soil more than a core aerator. Core aeration is much better at loosening up the soil etc. Not to say the spiker does not work but pulling cores are much more effective.

I got the ballast boxes thrown in when I got mine. I filled them with sand. They sucked.

Since then, I've formed myself 2 concrete blocks with rebar hooks on them, and that works pretty well. I think the 2 blocks add about 1000lbs.... Pulls nice cores now.

The biggest key I find, is waiting until the top few inches of soil are moist from a rain. That's when the real goose turds are produced.

What aerator do you have? I just bought a used Bush Hog PL600. I added about 400lbs weight to it. It did ok, but the ground is really hard due to the drought. I thought much more weight may damage it, but that is just gut instinct. If it is proper to add 600 or 700 lbs on it then I will.

These posts are old but I just bought an EverythingAttachments 36 inch core aerator and it is a dream. Very happy with its quality, weight, performance and price. Hope this helps someone in 2014. Watch their videos at their website - really nice product.

I bet it's a load on the 2360, but the heavy weight produces great results!!:thumbsup:
