Yanmar 1602 2wd
My draw bar has become comma shaped for the second time.
I have a 1602 2wd with a 36" Howe brush cutter. The rod bent, alllowing the sway braces to go slack and the arms to hit the tires.
Can anyone offer some advice?

I can't think of a permanent fix for that, outside of some serious re-machining, unless a Yanmar parts dealer knows of a beefier assembly. Looks like that could happen any time your cutter hits a snag.

Do you pull the mower with the drawbar? Or does the mower attach to the links with the drawbar?

Most drawbars being used for pulling would look like this.

I agree with norm.

I think i would fab up a bracket out of box and angle, and attach it where that pin attaches.. trying to keep the geometry the same.. perhaps continue to use the pin.. but use the box/channel/angle as an outsde stiffener.. or outter 'bearing'. or do away with the pin and mount somebolts or dowel or pins for the draft links to ride on, and then rig up a place for the check chains. Mount to the oem bracket the pin mounts to.

Did you not look at his pic? he posted one.

Follow the lower 3pt lift arms back from the mower to the diffy casting on his tractor.. there you will see the excuse for a 3pt mount that yanmar came up with.

if that is OEM.. I'm a bit disapointed in yanmar engineering. To date, everything I've seen of there's on these little tractors has been ahead of the times... this however.. was shoddy design in all it's glory.

( I'm guessing he got the terminology wrong and that is not refered to as a drawbar.. but who knows.. i don't have the parts book in front of me.. )

Yes I did, but I did not realize it was a cut & paste pic showing installation & bar individually. I thought he had backed up to the hay wagon he stores the cutter under. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Being that most people don't remove the 3 pt hitch that often, why not some kind of flat bracket twisted 90 deg. & a slightly longer rod. Catch the raised bracket on the outer axle housing.

My thoughts exactly, Chris, very cheesy looking for Yanmar standards. Maybe Aaron Murray from Hoye will jump in with some ideas. I know that he has an assembly for the YM240/2000 that supports the lower lift arms from both the differential housing and the outer end of the axle housing. Possibly something is available for the YM1602.

Not sure what kind of assembly you're referencing for the 2000, as it comes from the factory as a 3 point hitch. I believe the 1602 is a two point, meaning this poster has a conversion. I would go back to the seller. When we convert 1401s, etc. we use a hardened 3/4" (maybe even 1", I don't recall) rod, and we have never had a problem. The rod pictured looks to be much smaller, and perhaps it is soft steel as well.

From the picture and the direction of the bend, I'd have to say it's another case of backing up to push against something that doesn't move. But I also agree its a poor design to expect that rod to withstand the loads at the pivot point of the lift arms.
I'd look into building a bracket under the fender/axle bolts and extend that pivot rod over to that bracket. That should help carry the load (although something else will probably bend if backing into an immovable object).

The pic of the 3pt is poor, and makes it very difficult to see much detail. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
