Hi folks...gravelman here...moved to Westmoreland NH... a piece of heaven up here. I am wondering if anyone has thoughts about what kind of 3 pt hitch mounted log splitter i should get ...i have a Massey 36 hp tractor. will only use it occassionally but was trying to avoid a selfcontained machine if i can use the tractors portability and hydraulics. thanks

I am never a fan of 3PH splitters cause they are either slow, or you are using a big tractor.
But for ocassional use, they would be fine. Just not something I would want to have to split 8 or 10 cord of wood per year using.
That said, the Speeco units usually sold by tractor supply work just fine.

When I fell a tree 1/2 of the wood does not need splitting. I don't know your situation but I like to think of how many logs that actually need splitting instead of saying a cord.
The definition of occasional use for me is 30 to 40 logs less than 14" diameter twice a year. I had a 3 pt wood splitter but each time I needed to split wood, taking an implement off, putting on the wood splitter, taking it back off, I figured I could do it faster with an axe. I ended up selling the 3 point splitter (never used) and buying a 5 ton electric splitter from Harbor Freight. Just the right fit for me. You are a lot further North than me and your occasional may be defined differently. If you can estimate how many and size of logs you will be splitting per year, hopefully the advice given here will be sound.
The smaller splitter also takes up a small footprint of storage for 99.9% of the year.

My PowerHorse 13 ton 3 point splitter is about right for me to split up to 5 cords a year. I have a quick hitch, so on and off is only a few minutes. I don't think a 5 ton splitter would work for me with mostly oak, elm, ash etc.

I have a speco splitmaster. Works well and is well built. There is a 4 way wedge for it as well.
