thanks. Just getting ready to pull the trigger on one and I am just a little worried on the cycle time. I am sure it will be plenty fast.

Yes, its listed at 4.8 GPM. I know it works as fast as I can.

i always have a lot of steel around, so last year i built my own. i have a large wood stove and a medium fireplace insert. the max i can burn in the fireplace insert is 18", so i do all my wood at 16". i went with a 18" cylinder and that helps on cycle times a lot. there's no excess to take up like there would be on a 24" cylinder. i mounted the cylinder so there's 19" between the ram and wedge.
i had looked at the little 2-way 3ph splitter sold by northern, and they rate it for either 12 or 14" logs, so its a safe bet it will do that and probably a hair more - with only a 3" cylinder. most splitters are 4" (or larger now) cylinders, but in the interest of cycle time and the fact that i don't end up with a lot of wood over 16", i cut down to a 3 1/2" cylinder. smaller diameter = less fluid needed to fill.
for power, i used the remotes on my tractor: jd 770 with 5.6 gpm flow. i'm sure there are faster units, but by shortening the stroke and cutting the diameter of the cylinder, this thing cycles as fast as a one man operation can split.
i was considering building the splitter so it could go either horizontal or vertical, until one of my uncles looked at me funny and asked why i wouldn't just lower the 3ph instead. apparently all my years of designing failed me at that point. just build your splitter so the top & bottom pins are the same distance apart as the tractor, and you will be able to adjust the height as needed from ground level to 3 feet high with the lever on the tractor. drop it to the ground and roll the heavy pieces on to split, and put it at a good working height for the light stuff.

I got a 20 ton ***. Log splitter from ram splitter three point hook up made it in to a stand alone Doug set me up with a princes pump my 1528 run on ideal 4 to 6 hour for 5 days on one tank of fuel. It has never let me down. They are building me a firewood wrapper now. You call Doug at Ramsplitters tell him what you need he will help you with it.
