3 shots for help

   / 3 shots for help #11
Three evenly spaced shots is more what I think of as a distress signal. If they are three quick shots I just think someone is shooting at a running animal, too far apart and I think they are target shooting. I don't believe I have ever heard of anyone being rescued by a three shot signal though. Maybe if you knew people were already looking for you it could help guide them in.

Had a friend while deer hunting tell me......If you hear "So many" shots", followed by "So many shots" , then wait exactly "So many minutes then another quick shot", then that was me.....

My reply was " When you hear a BOOM and a YAHOOOOOO,I got the bugger, then That's me..!!"

Would probably be best to wait until 3-4 hours after sunset when someone's likely to be looking for you or at least report you as a poacher.

Old poachers advice -" the first shot people think they might have heard a noise????, after that they are listening!!!" .. MikeD74t

As a former Boy Scout...

SOS is 3 shorts followed by 3 longs followed by 3 shorts without pause.

Morse Code was replaced replaced by the Global Maritime Distress Safety System 11 years ago in 1999.

I also remember 3 shots for distress now that you mention it.

I thought the title meant 3 shots of whiskey...I don't normally need help after 3...but after 5, I might be a bit unsteady.

Since I shoot a single shot I guess my SOS capabilities have gone to SOL.

Yes, 3 deliberate, equally timed shots would get more peoples attention.

It's that unnatural sounding sequence that makes it an effective international distress signal. For it to be most effective it should be repeated as often as possible, with a pause in between. Could also be done with a flash light, a whistle, a car horn or banging on a pot/pan etc.

For single shot, just keep firing with an equal time between, would be your best hope of attracting attention.

It's the timing thing makes us take note and realize it's intentional.
It's hard not to notice, even in an area where gun shots are common.
