3038e Front Wheel Assy Fell Off!!!

Just got the news:

No Tech Service Bulletins regarding this issue
Out of warranty
$500

There goes the baby's new pair of shoes.

That is kinda a "low blow"... Any ideas on why the snap ring "decided" to just "come loose"?

Any damage to the ring groove? How about the axle pinion?

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out why it happened so that I can make sure it doesn't happen again. I've come up with nothing so far. The only obvious damage was done to the snap ring and "shim" that fell into the gearing. The snap ring was chewed into several pieces and the shim was bent all to heck. One of the bearings didn't feel "right" so I told them to replace all the bearings and the seals.... just in case.

All I know is that I will likely NEVER trust the thing again. I'll also never engage the 4x4 until I absolutely need it RIGHT NOW then disengage it as soon as it's no longer needed. I'll also be ordering an extra snap ring and some shims to keep handy just in case I'm ever out in the middle of no where again and the friggin' wheel hub decides to come unmade.

I'm SERIOUSLY considering jacking it up and sliding a new one under it. A 5045 with loader would be just about right since the front axle goes straight into the wheel hub and doesn't have two 90 degree turns. Plus the bigger front wheels would ride much nicer over rough terrain..... like wild hog rootings for instance. The only problem with that is that I would need a higher capacity trailer since the 5045 with loader is MUCH heavier.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I hate that when a trailer decides what size toy we can have. :D :D

Yep... then you start making "side-long" glances at your truck, too!

Then the Better Half starts making "side-long" glances at you when you start dropping not-so-subtle hints.

UPDATE:

10 hours of planting food plots, mowing power lines and shooting lanes, pushing fallen trees out of roads and trails, etc.... So far so good.

Used the rear differential lock whenever the going got slippery. Only engaged 4x4 when I absolutely needed it.

Updates to follow, but, no news is good news.

P.S. - Had a blow out on my equipment trailer coming home while fully loaded. Had bought a spare last year "just in case". That was fun. Here's a pic of fully loaded trailer:

I don't follow the reasoning of bcb.

Seems like lifting a load in the bucket would not put a load on the snap ring that failed.

For me, a downforce on the bucket causing lifting of the front end may do it, especially if the wheel is in a tight spot.

I revisited the site of the malfunction and I think I figured out what happened. Shoot down my logic:

While pushing the two big limbs that fell off the tree, one of them turned and went under the loader longways and the front right tire ran up onto the limb. The tractor was in 4x4 and the wheel could not spin since it was sitting on top of the limb and the limb was held fast by the loader. There was evidently enough force applied to the beveled gears in the spindle hub to break the snap ring.

It would be like trying to push against an immovable object with the loader while the front right wheel is on pavement. Something would have to give if the tire couldn't spin.

Thoughts?
