3038e Front Wheel Assy Fell Off!!!

/ 3038e Front Wheel Assy Fell Off!!! #21
I revisited the site of the malfunction and I think I figured out what happened. Shoot down my logic:

While pushing the two big limbs that fell off the tree, one of them turned and went under the loader longways and the front right tire ran up onto the limb. The tractor was in 4x4 and the wheel could not spin since it was sitting on top of the limb and the limb was held fast by the loader. There was evidently enough force applied to the beveled gears in the spindle hub to break the snap ring.

It would be like trying to push against an immovable object with the loader while the front right wheel is on pavement. Something would have to give if the tire couldn't spin.

Thoughts?

I understand what you are saying. I think that is how damage gets done. Side panels get damaged in the way that you describe. It's down under and out front. Sometimes we don't know all that goes on down under there.:D

Good that you're up and running again.

Actually, that sounds somewhat reassuring to me as I've got a 3038e also. I'd rather the cause of the problem be something "action" related than just something that happened out of the blue - if you know what I mean ...

Good point.

I have read little here about problems with the 3038 or the 3032 for that matter. Good tractors.

Indeed I do.

The only fallacy I can think of is that I would have assumed that the left front tire would spin on the dirt and take the force off of the right wheel. Since that didn't happen, I have to assume that the front wheel drive is limited slip. I'll have to look at the specs to check that.

Of course, I can setup a test to check that theory if someone will kindly donate $500 to the cause. ;)

The specs say the 3038e front differential is Limited Slip.

BINGO!!!!

I think I can breath easier now.

Glad you (and we) can breath easier.

Might I suggest you going back to your original opening post, and add some edit so a new reader with possibly a 3038e will not go into heart arrest, and that you have found a possible cause that makes the problem less alarming. ;) Your feedback, albeit at your expense, is what TBN is all about for tractor owners, present and future.

Still seems like a weak point, but when something has to give, maybe the snap ring is the easiest to fix rather than needing a new casting, etc.
