The poppet style will leak less and hold more pressure when they are un-coupled. The problem with mixing the styles is that in some cases, you can have a low or no flow problem because they aren't really made to be used together. The poppet in the female may not push the ball in the male back enough to completely un-seat it.
It is rare that it will ever cause a problem, buy why take the chance.
Sounds like you got a good deal on the hoses! Hate to say it but I've bought a hose or two at TSC and MOST places that make custom hoses will provide a much higher quality hose. I like to stick with the good brands like Weatherhead, Parker, or Gates. Lots of low quality stuff coming in on the boats from China these days. There is a lot of imported hose of very good quality and many of the big companies have plants around the world but the TSC stuff seems pretty bad. It is not branded by any company and I think they just bought what they could profit the most on.
