3240 HST-1 vs. 3240 HST-3

Not sure but I don't see any tier 3 below the 75hp category which I believe was the category being asked about.

As stated earlier in this string, this horsepower range went directly from tier2 to tier4i. There never was a tier3 for this horsepower range. Philip.

Here is a page from the GrandL series brochure printed in March 2009 I picked up when I bought my L3940 from the dealer in August 2009. It states engines comply with EPA's interim tier 4 emmision standards. Philip.

As does my L5740HST-1 right on the emissions sticker on the engine.

Here is something interesting I ran across. Kubota industrial engine data sheet for the engine in my tractor. Read last paragraph on the left column. This engine 'offers seamless transition from tier 2 to interim tier 4 ...'. Does not mention tier 3, because it was skipped in this power range. Philip.

The attached link has the off road engine emission standards. You will notice there is a Tier 3 for everything above 37 kW (50 HP). If you look at the Tier 4 interim you will see the same numbers for part of the range, but the power range changed. Engines in the bottom half of the range that met Tier 3 automatically also became Tier 4 interim compliant, but engines in the top half of the range remain Tier 3 engines until the Tier 4 interim goes into effect next January. Its a moot point for almost everybody here but the law has fine print that states if you sell machines that beat the standard, you get credits to allow you to sell machines that don't meet the standard until everything balances out.

Emission Standards: USA: Nonroad Diesel Engines

From what I have seen of Tier 4 final engines in the smaller sizes already released, we can look forward to a particulate filter that will burn out the trapped soot, but it may only regenerate when you are really working hard.

I'm also a tractor newbee, but I've been trying to learn everything I can on compact tractors lately. Last week I ordered my first tractor, a Kubota L3940/HSTC, with the gen 3 engine. My Kubota dealer told me the L30 Series had Generation 2 engine, the L40 Series has the Gen 3 engine, and next year Kubota is coming out with the Gen 4 engine. According to my dealer the various generations of engines have nothing to do with horsepower or torque, but rather how the engine handles exhaust emissions.

Reference the 3240 model. One Kubota dealer told me that some dealers aren't selling the 3240 model because this engine is on the boarder of not having quite enough power to operate certain attachments, particularly the 3240/HSTC model due to the additional weight of the cab and power requirements to operate the A/C compressor.

Based on what I heard about the 3240/HTSC (above) I was planning on buying a L3540/HTSC but then noticed in the 3540 specs that it only has 28hp at the PTO. Several of the rear attachments I need require at least 30 PTO horsepower, so that's why I decided to go with the 3940.

The dealer does not know what he is talking about when he is refering to gen 2, gen 3, and gen 4 engines. The engine in my 2009 L3940HST-1 and the one in your 2011 L3940HSTC-3 meet the same emmision requirements, US EPA non-road tier 4 iterim. Ask the dealer to show you this 'gen x' stuff in literatur or spec sheets. Bet he goes 'umm', chages subject, and offers you new hat! FYI, you ordered a L3940HSTC-3. The -3 refers to the model change through out life of the GrandL product, nothing to do with the engine, see above post for more details. Nice tractor, good luck! Philip.

I agree with Philip8N, You are also better off with the L3940. Great tractor. I had a L3540 that I traded for it because I upgraded to a cab. The L3540 is still a great tractor but going to the next size up in the GL series to the L3940/HSTC you will not regret. Not enough difference in price IMO not to.

From Orange Tractor Talks.
Engine
All Grand L40s use Kubota’s latest interim Tier IV compliant 4 cylinder diesel engines manufactured in their Tsukuba, Japan engine plant. The Grand L40s powerplants belong to the 03 Engine Series which uses Kubota’s own TVCS (Three Vortex Combustion System) combustion chamber design. TVCS which means lower operating noise, shorter plug preheat times and most importantly, compliance with the United State’s EPA diesel engine emission requirements.

One reason some dealers exclude particular models from the lineup they sell is elevation. I was just looking at an altitude derate table for some engines and NA engines lost 20% at 5,000 foot elevation while turbo versions still ran near 100%. Not saying this is the case here but a 32 HP engine will only have 25 HP at 5,000 feet but will have the same losses - spinning the hydro, A/C compressor, etc. The only thing that will drop is fan power because it is spinning in a much lower air density. Some dealers will sell anything that is available but others will quickly find out which one is a dud for their area and steer their customer in the right direction even though the customer may then go to a different dealer and buy the tractor he originally intended and be pissed because it really sucks.
