3320 and 4 Aux Lights

A previous post that I started began some conversation about adding 4 aux lights (2 forward above the blinkers and 2 rear, all on the ROP). A couple people mentioned ordering all 4 but their dealers wouldn't install or gave warnings when installing. One mentioned the light switch wouldn't handle that much current and another was told that the alternator could not keep up with all 6 lights at the same time (4 Aux and 2 headlights).

Well they just installed my 4th light and gave me the warning that the directions say the light switch won't handle the current and could be damaged. I've used them a couple times and they seem to work fine. Has anyone else done this and has anyone experienced any problems? Burning up switches, anything getting hot, alternator not keeping up, etc...?

Your 3320 and my 3520 are the same basic tractor. Why take a chance on burning up your light switch and maybe your tractor? I do not know if you have the upgrade on the cruise control but if you don't there is an alternate solution. You can go to a marine supply store and buy switches to go into the spaces on your right fender. A gator light switch from JD will also work and keep it "ALL JD". They snap right in. You just neet to remove the two screws and two 10mm bolts from under your fender to raise the console. 5 minute job to remove and replace. Run a hotwire to the fender and you're all set. I also put in a couple of cigarette lighter plug-ins while I was at it.
I do not know about the alternator pull. It depends on your alternator output as I believe JD has a standard and a high output for our tractors.

Yeah do the console switch, and get the Optima Yellow 51, you'll bne in good shape....

you could also just put in a relay. Get a driving or fog light relay from any auto parts store. Almost easier than replacing the switch

This weekend I am putting 3 more switch in on my 3120.I have the forwarding and daul rear work lights already but it am putting in grille strobes and 2 work light from JD dealer that will light up the sides of the tractor.And a beacon light for the top of the ROPS.There is 3 out lines under the console where my cruise control switches which there is 3 and the fourth has a switch for my trailer marker light option.The other 3 will be mounted in front of that for the new light switches. Here is a picture of when I got the tractor with the forwarding lights and daul rear work lights.Will post a up graded pictures of the console.

I was under the impression that the limitation was caused by the standard alternator. The upgrade alt can handle the additional current. I have a hard time believing the switch can only handle 2 auxillary lights. My $.02.

Which alternator do you have?

It would depend on amp draw and the gauge wire used as well. Many switches may not withstand the amp draw from 4 high beam lights. In your car the switch itself does not pass the full current that goes to the lights.

I say install a switch that controls the low amp circuit to a relay and use the relay to pass the full amps to the lights.

Maybe I will install this tomorrow on my 3320 and do a write up on it.

I will see if I can get a gator switch from my dealer in the morning. Anyone have the part numbers handy for the switch that fits the 3320 right hand panel.

Part number for the gator switch is AM117324 BTW. Thanks JD3520 for the info!

Wish I could take credit for the switch idea but someone else on this forum came up with it. I just took the idea and ran with it alittle further. Since that pic I have installed two more switches. Don't need them yet but it looks nice. The wire I orginally ran was big enough for this expansion.

Don't forget to fuse the wire at the origin with an in-line fuse or fuse link.

Remember a 10mm nut driver, a phillips screwdriver, and two minutes will have the console removed so removal of the dummy blocks will be easy and not trear up the console. Don't try prying them out w/o removing the console or damage will occur. There is plenty of work room once the console is removed.
