Ever use Skype to do a 2-way video conference? I'll bet I can find the problem remotely. It would help if you have a hi-res (not necessesarily high def) video camera, good lighting and a high speed wireless or good wired connection via a laptop.
You have not described what the bad knot strings look like. Is there a knot but only one section, is it ripped apart, etc. What do you mean by 1/2 a knot ? That's not good enough. You need a whole knot ! Can you make a closeup video of your baler being turned over by hand and without hay or twine loaded? That would sure help, too.
Wiper arms can be welded back together. They are malleable iron.
