( Just looked like an Oliver in the pic. No offense meant to the Deere, for sure. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

I had mixed feelings on that too, color was a little off for JD, but wasn't sure on second look either. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I assumed it was not JD factory 3pt, as he would know there is no down pressure on one of those, and Oliver of that era typically does have an aftermarket 3pt added on, so.......

The several thousand dollar post pounders are nice, but spendy. Depends on how much you want to do. Somewhere here in the past I got the link to the company selling portable Tee post pounders, think you need a big air source or generator to run them tho.

I just push them in the ground with my front end loader. (getting them out is the fun part) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

no offense taken on mistakin the JD for an Oliver. In fact I may name it Oliver "Ollie" now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I've seen other people name their tractors in here so why not Oliver for the 2010. As for the "3ph pounder" idea. I was thinking about that again today and how a hydraulic arm rigged up might work but I would still need it "anchored" in order to work. So I might toy around with some ideas but in the mean time I think I'm going to practice with my FEL bucket. Reason for wanting it on the 3ph is as I stated before. And Ollie the JD 2010 doesn't have a FEL so that's kinda another reason. But I do like the idea of using the "supplies" and/or dirt for weight and still get the job done. We don't have a tremendous amount of fencing to do but I was hoping that if I could rig up something I might be able to do a little side work helping other people out with some light fence work. By no means am I trying to achieve professional fencer status. Just a little extra side work to help people out and put a little diesel fuel/implement money in my pocket. And trying to find the most efficient way yet maintaining good quality workmanship is what am looking for. In all my adventures talking to people, some say they could use a little fencing done here and there but can't afford to pay for a professional and most of them have smaller type yards/farms. I've been kinda finding out that having a tractor is like having horses and pools, once people know you have 'em, they all want to play with 'em. I also see a lot of potential in bartering with having a tractor. Since buying our JD 4500 that came with the FEL and grapple arms a couple of weeks ago, I've had about 4 people ask me, "hey can you come over and do ____?".
I've told most of them no with the exception of a friend of mine but if I'm being honest, I need some serious seat time on this thing if I'm going to be any good at it. So we'll see how it goes. But thanks to all who gave me input and insight for the idea. It'll probably be one of those ideas that hopefully materialize one day but it's not a priority. Or better yet, have one the "real farmer/welder/hydraulic/fencer" guru's in here build it and share the plans. Of course I'd also pay for some plans for something like this too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't know about y'all but there's just somethin about a nice lookin fence. It kinda sets the tone for the rest of the property. And hopefully one day we'll have a nice looking fence. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

thanks again!
y'all rock!

I drive them with my hoe and loaders both but the threep oint idea would need some sort of an impacting rig. I have seen alot of homemade pile drivers made from a weight and have a channel with slides the weight attaches to. Then a car axle with a drum on one side and abrake on the other to make it ower up and free fall down. I thought about making a smaller one out of an old golfcart rearend and a 300 pound weight. youcould use your toplink and sidelink to adjust the mast for plumb.

There are some post drivers made to be mounted on the front. That way you could keep your carryall on the back to carry posts or other stuff.

Stevenpaul, my ground is much too rocky for something like this to work, however I think there may be a way to use the hydraulics to work for you. If you could attach a pulley to the tow bar, (wheel side up) one end of the cable to the lift and the other to the post driver. This way by raising the three point it would pull the cable on pulley thus pulling down on the post driver. It may not be feasible, but I think the idea is there. It probably wouldn't go straight down.

Another way is to mount a ridgid rack on the back of his tractor, with a hyd cylinder that pushes down. Would maybe want more than the standard 8" push. Would sort of be his design, but use the hyd cylinder instead of weight or the 3pt to make down pressure.

Humbleto and rambler,

Cool ideas, can either one of you draw a sketch of your ideas. I think I can picture in my mind kinda what you're talkin about but me being the visual kinda person that I am (in books I look at pictures before reading the words /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
it would be nice to see a rough draft picture. But I do think the pulley to the towbar can be done somehow.

thanks again,
one thing about TBN is the awsome collaboration of ideas that come together to achieve the same results.....tractor time! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If anyone should be offended by mistaking a Deere for an Oliver...it'd be the Oliver owners!!! A running joke out here is to yell "Honey...Look...there's a John Deere!!" when the neighbors are out as you drive by.Sure to get you a freindly one finger wave!!

I saw a program on one of the educational channels where the Chinese were using a soil compactor that had a large weighted wheel that'd literally jump off the ground as it revolved.Something like that could be mounted far enough out to lift high enough and drive posts.
I don't have such problems because I provided for downforce when I built the Farmnought /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Sure is nice when ya gotta take off the tire chains!!
