I don't know if this is the correct arena for the question, but I'll ask it here anyway.
Brands under consideration are:
Landpride,Woods,Befco or Kubotas
size ranges from 37" Kubota to about 42" for the others
My main question is, what is the best drive protection, sheer pins or clutchs. I don't know enough to ask alot of question about tillers but I hope you will share any details you all might know. This is the only othert implement I intend to get (for now,... he he he, don't tell my wife I giggled!)
I have a 60" deck and a FEL on the way!
Thanks all!

Rogue, if you're going to be frequently hitting rocks, stumps, etc., the clutch is best. However, just remember that it usually costs about $100 more and you do need to maintain it; clean, adjust, etc. periodically. A couple of years ago, a neighbor rented a tiller. The slip clutch slipped so badly that it wouldn't work in his clay, so he returned it and called me to come till his garden./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif On the other hand, personally, I have no use for a slip clutch on any of my implements; just have shear pins (actually bolts) and have not sheared any.

Hi,

I have just purchased a BX2200 and joined this forum. My home sits on a relatively flat 3.5 acres. I have never owned a tractor although I'm orginally from Iowa and have lived in Tennessee for several years. I find your notes informative and witty and hope to learn the basics and more. I mow with a 76" cut Yazoo and my wife mows with the BX and refers to it as her tractor. I am presently seeking a rototiller attachment,
in the fall I have to start doing something about my very lumpy lot. Take my username as a joke.

Rogue, I purchased the Howard Rotavator HR-3 tiller for my BX. It is 50" wide, and works great even in hard clay. The only thing I might complain about is that it doesn't seem to go deep enough for some plants, but I could probably alleviate that issue by removing the skid plates...they don't seem to go high enough. The only time the engine lugged a bit is with ground that hadn't ever been turned, and even then it wasn't bad. For the record, my HR-3 came with a clutch...

I run the 52" Bota tiller on mine.
Charliebrn,
At first I too thought there was a depth problem. However, the skid shoes sink into the soil substantially after a few passes as the dirt softens up I can get a goot 10 inch depth.

whats the model # on the 52 Kubota tiller? My dealer said it was only 37" for the BX. I assume this is one for a bigger tractor that you use on the BX?

It is a BL52C which is actually 49" cutting width. I got this one because it is wider than the tire width and doesn't leave any tire tracks.

I've used it to bust moderately clay soils with heavy sod/clover and it ate it up with minimal loading of the tractor running at 3/4 throttle. Our garden is very sandy loam soil and the tiller goes down to 10" in this stuff and minces the soil into a very fine texture it spins so fast.
I'll hate to admit it, but I've also used it to chew up 3" ash stumps by slowly lowering the tiller on it which quickly shreaded the stumps with little more than a slight burp.
This is one tough puppy!
Apparantly this tiller was offered for the BX the 1st year than they switched to the smaller 40" model. The 52 is offered for the B7500 & B2410 & 2710 & 2910.
While I haven't heard to many tillers, this one is by far the quietest one of the bunch.
