I have a 2004 JD X585, I'm thinking of getting a 3pt. hitch log splitter, has anyone had any experience with one ? Is the tractor under powered engine and hydralic wise to operate one ?

It will be a slower than most standalone units due to the hydraulic pump on the tractor (from searching around the net for the pump size). If this is for home it is no big deal. I would look at one that splits both ways so the speed decrease is less noticeable.

I built one and used it on my Kubota B2910. But I used a 22gpm PTO pump. I loved that splitter. Lost it in a shop fire. I would be concerned that your tractor hydraulics can run a splitter fast enough. Nothing more aggravating than waiting for a splitter to cycle.

Even though that's supposedly a Cat 1 hitch, I'd be concerned - even if a rear splitter didn't lift the front end off the ground - that the TPH couldn't lift the splitter to a sensible working height. The hydraulic pump might also give you a cycle time that would permit a nap between splits.

one argument people make between TPH splitters and a stand alone unit is hours on the tractor.

Diesel tractor power with a sufficient HYD pump capacity and PSI makes the TPH unit the winner in my book, but that is simply opinion. Plus I have more than one tractor.

With your tractor, it is so small and seemingly special purposed (lawn care) that my counsel to you would be to look into purchasing a standalone splitter.

I really like my 3 pt splitter, but I don't think I would put one on a tractor smaller than my 2320.

I have a Harbor Freight 14 ton 3-pt splitter on my BX-24 and am content. Yes, it's slow, but so am I. I was cracking 100lb rounds of beech and black locust today, and it was infinitely faster than me bouncing a maul on them, and a whole lot cheaper than other solutions.

The pump is rated at 6.2 gpm, and I run the engine at 2500 rpm for a faster than bread rising cycle rate.

Do your homework on the weight and flow requirements, and then make the call.

That is some kinda' splitter!

Beautiful!!

I added two rear remotes and a TPH crosswise mounted splitter. Cross mounting allows a vertical position for the large rounds. I'm happy with all of it.

Jinma tractor pump is something like 8 GPM and the splitter can easily keep two people busy with loading and unloading.

I like the versatility of vertical and horizontal. My back hoe will arrive next week but I can still run the splitter, as usual, off the remotes.

It works for me....:)
