If you get a PTO driven pump, make sure you clean it well after using it and the manual for mine recommended putting antifreeze mixture in it when stored as it not only keeps it from freezing, but also lubricates the pump. The chemicals are pretty caustic.

As others mentioned, I use 2,4,d for the broadleaf weed control. If you want to save some money, you can ususally get it at the local extension office. It is also available at places like tractor supply for a fairly reasonable rate. If you buy chemicals at the store, make sure you look at the amount of active ingrediant. It can vary greatly which affects how much it really costs. I have been buying the glyphosate product at Tractor supply in 2.5 gallon quantity and a 41% strength. That goes a long way for my usage. For very little more than the 55 gallon sprayer you can get one with a 10-12' boom which is really nice for a lot of things - especially reaching under trees without getting wiped off the tractor. Mine I bought at Rural King and is from Agri-Supply. I purchased a separate 6 roller PTO pump that works very well. Calibration - for four acres i would not spend a lot of time as you can put a little extra chemical on and it is not a big cost factor. Cleanout - spray it empty and put a bunch of water in it and spray your driveway - then you have cleaned the whole system and minimized dust if you have a gravel driveway. Pump care - drain it and put a teaspoon of oil in it and turn it by hand - coats everything and it is ready for use next time.

I should have mentioned in a lawn. Will these hurt the grass?

I have a 50 gallon pto driven with 8-10 foot boom and 7 nozzles. One mix of 2, 4D in 50 gallons does 4 acres. I get the 2, 4D from Tractor Supply. That 2.5 gallon jug of 2, 4D will do my 9 acres and then some. Sometimes I add a wetting agent.

As others mentioned you need to rinse stuff out and oil your rollers otherwise you end up taking the pump apart to free it up. We spray once in a while meaning every few years once we got the original problem under control. Spot spraying on the off years.
