You are correct in that the lines MUST be either connected together, or connected to a Open Center valve so that the fluid will have some place to go. There is the full flow of the hydraulic pump in those line whenever the tractor is running-and interrupting that flow can cause damage to the machine.
So basically, when the backhoe is removed-the two lines are coupled together forming the PB loop. You can insert a OC valve into the loop to power other things just the the backhoe is inserted into the loop.

Here's what I wrote: The part I don't get is why does the BH need a separate return and a PB connection? When is the return to tank flowing? I don't understand the note in the OM (see attached, bottom of page, after "Important:..."). If you can explain it, I'll stop doing this :confused2: Either way, thanks for replying.

In a PB setup, only "waste oil" from the cylinders flows to the T or OUT port. Kubota only very recently use PB equipped valve on their backhoes, JD still does not-they only have to lines.
I am not saying you are wrong by any means-quite the contrary. But I am saying that there are a LOT of 'hoes and splitters hooked up without it.
